We experienced a network interruption affecting Sydney web test location due to misconfiguration, which happened during scheduled network maintenance by internal network team. Only web tests, which monitor selected internal Microsoft properties were affected. Affected monitors would fail intermittently during the impact window from Sydney location. Our logs show the incident started on 2/11, 20:20 UTC and ended on 2/11, 22:08 UTC. If the web test was configured to use multiple endpoints, all other locations were working fine during the impact window. Less than 1% of the global web tests were affected.
• Root Cause: The failure was due to misconfiguration of network route priority for Microsoft internal site requests, which occurred during scheduled network maintenance window.
• Chance of Reoccurrence: Low chance of reoccurrence. Network maintenance is complete and is not common.
• Lessons Learned: Datacenter networking team will review this incident and will create work items to prevent those types of issues from happening in the future.
• Incident Timeline: 1 Hour & 48 minutes – 2/11, 20:20 UTC through 2/11, 22:08 UTC
