Program Manager - XNA Community

Next week, the XNA Creators Club Online site will be shut down for a short time in preparation for the launch of our new site featuring the Community Games on Xbox LIVE Beta. We’re excited about the new design and functionality of the improved XNA Creators Club Online web site, and we eagerly look forward to your return!  In the meantime, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause during the outage

    Finally,the BIG day is coming.

  3. CptCheerios says:

Whens the down time supposed to end?

  4. jenkmeister says:

We aren’t giving out an end time just yet…

but since we did say to look here for updates, we are about 30% through our deployment/upgrade process right now… though, that was the quick part of the process… Hang in there, it’s worth the wait.

  5. sofakng says:

I’m just wondering, but how are non-creators club members going to access these news games when the full version of this is released?

Will they need a PC or can they just use their 360 to download the games?

  6. jenkmeister says:

During the beta, members will be able to access games that are approved for the community directly on the marketplace.

Unfortunately for non-creators club members, there will be no access to these games during the beta.

Once the beta is completed (as to your question), anyone will be able to access approved games via the Xbox.

  7. jenkmeister says:

Another update on our progress… we are around 50% complete now… things are looking good so far 🙂

  8. Twanks says:

Any new updates you’re willing to throw our way? 🙂

  9. jenkmeister says:

Ok, we are about 66% done now… 😉

  10. sofakng says:

    Thanks for the updates!

Will user created games be able to use LIVE networking for online multiplayer, etc?

    (my last question, I promise!)

  11. Twanks says:

Yeah, user created games will be able to use LIVE for online multiplayer.

  12. jenkmeister says:

That’d be a big yes. Your user created games are the same games you can make now, only we’ve given you a way to distribute them.

We are almost done with all the prep work and will go into a final testing mode shortly.

Still can’t say exactly when we’ll be back but we have moved a few more % now… 😉

  13. Twanks says:

If you can’t answer this I understand but does part of this process move the site to faster hosting? I usually don’t have a problem with the speed but there are certain times it could be a little more zippy.

  14. jenkmeister says:

That one I can answer. We have moved to a new operations environment and every piece of code is new. While we haven’t finished every piece of optimization and performance work just yet, we’ll continue to do that in the coming months.

For now though, you should expect much faster response times, page loads and downloads. If you aren’t, please let us know so we can make that better and better…

Ok… the team is going offline now to dive deep into final testing. See you on the other side!

Go get those games ready! 🙂

  15. Twanks says:

One last thing, will we need to be building in XNA 2.0 or do we need to go ahead and install the 3.0 CTP for the Community Games Beta?

  16. bitterwhendead says:

This is very exciting. I’m very impressed with what Microsoft has done for indie developers. I can’t wait to see the new site!

  17. jenkmeister says:

For the beta, GS 2.0 will be the only supported platform. GS 3.0 will be supported later this year.

  18. Twanks says:

Should anyone looking here still be up waiting or should we just check in the morning?

  19. jenkmeister says:

Since I can’t give you an exact time right now, check again in the morning/lunch time and we’ll put out another update to let everyone know what’s going on. Stay tuned!

  20. BenS1 says:

The new site sounds exciting, but as I’m based in the UK I believe that the Beta of the Community Games wont be open to me?

Please don’t take this as a negative comment, but if you are moving to a new web server then wouldn’t it of made sense to of setup the new site  on the new server in private whilst the old site continued in parallel, and only once its working and you’re happy that its been fully tested then switch over from the old site to the new site instantly, i.e. without any downtime?

I guess this way it helps build up the anticipation and excitement, which is not bad thing. And a day or 2 offline isn’t the end of the world.

  21. CatalinZima says:

They coulnd’t do what you said (private server) because they need to preserve the contents of the current forum. And setting it up while the forum is still active would result in inconsistencies.

  22. Malmer says:

Is it possible to stream data/content from an external server using Live? This could be used to make use of more space than the minimum 150 MB (or whatever) for stuff like video, or even cooler, it could be used to make games that are based on things like real world weather, news, etc. Would be so COOL!!!

  23. Ultrahead says:

Interesting times are coming … 🙂

  24. Twanks says:

You won’t be able to access external servers using the Xbox Live API that is in XNA.

  25. jenkmeister says:

Well folks, we are almost there. Everything is looking really good. Everything is in place. Probably just a couple more hours and we’ll turn things on.

Since we are moving environments, there will be some lag time around the world as DNS servers pick up the new IP addresses for the sites, so once we go live, it might take a little bit of time for the new site to appear depending upon where you are in the world.

So, are your games ready? 🙂

  26. Twanks says:

Putting some finishing touches on one I’ve been working on. I just wrote it to test out the submission process.

  27. John.Doe says:

The new colors a little bit difficult to read, orange on gray seems to hurt my eyes 😉

Also, is it intended, that the forum sizes with the page width? I do have a 24" widescreen monitor and this is the first forum where I have the impression that each line contains almost no content when the browser is on full screen. I think it would be better if the forum width is the width of the header bar.
