Cloud computing and big data are two of the hottest trends in the enterprise. The question on most CIOs mind is, “How can my team securely connect all of the end points (PCs, phones, edge devices) and take advantage of the resulting data?”

This was the issue discussed during the Cloud Developer Conference 2013 here in Darmstadt, Germany, earlier this month. Over the two days around 600 attendees --mainly coming from an traditional IT background, and typically being a IT decision makers like CIOs--joined us to get the latest information on big data, cloud and also on the intelligent systems approach by Microsoft.

We, the Windows Embedded team, along with our partners Quibiq and Beckhoff, joined the conference, showing intelligent systems solutions for retail and industrial automation and offering workshops for the audience. Our general manager Barb Edson travelled from Redmond to share her views on how enterprises can capitalize on these trends in her keynote titled “Intelligent Systems: Converting Big Data into Business Insight." Windows Embedded and intelligent systems brings together the best of the Microsoft stack including SQL Server, Windows Server and Dynamics, to name a few. Our customer Royal Caribbean is a great example of this, and was featured in the CloudOS keynote.

The interest of the attendees in our topics was great; the workshops sold out quickly and we and our partners had the opportunity to engage with a large number of customers at our booth during the two days. You can read about Microsoft’s approach to big data here.
