Installing a virtual machine using the factory

The following is a sequence of simple steps you need to follow when installing a virtual machine using the VSTS Rangers factory. This example is based on Hyper-V, however, it can be used to install other virtualised environments and physical devices as well.

Create new VM

We recommend that you refer to the document “Virtualization of Visual Studio2010 – VSTS Rangers Base Image Guide”, topic “Create new Hyper-V Virtual Machine” for a step by step guide of creating a basic virtual machine.

Use “Image file (.iso)” option and ... image ... point at the appropriate VSTS Rangers factory ISO file, i.e. VSTSR-MDT-CA_LiteTouchPE_x86.iso image

Boot VM

Boot the VM from the Lite Touch Install ISO file. image

Select Installation Option

Select the appropriate task sequence: image

Specify machine name

Specify the machine name, i.e. TFS2010B232WT, for a BETA-2 based, 32-bit, WSS based image using Trial software. image

Confirm trial install

Applicable to TRIAL operating system installations only.

Confirm that you do not wish to specify a license key at this point. image

Watch the automation

Watch the installation of the pre-requisites, TFS and Visual Studio … or go for lunch J … etc. image image

Configure TFS

When you see the task suspension dialog, configure TFS manually using the Team Foundation Server Administration Console. image

For WSS based installations use the Standard Single Server configuration option.

For MOSS based installations use the Advanced configuration option. image

Click the “Resume Task Sequence” shortcut to continue and complete the optimization steps.
