Apple software checks in with Apple

Just saw this news earlier today reporting that a recently released Apple software update, specifically to a widget that runs on the desktop, checks in with Apple servers.  Apparently this feature is used to confirm that the widget that is running is the most current version. This blog is reporting that the check, described as Apple's own "modest home phoning behavior" checks to see if the version of the widget you are running is the same as the currently available one on Apple.com. This is essentially the same thing that the configuration check included in earlier releases (prior to June 27) of the WGA Notifications software. To be completely clear, as I've indicated previously the currently deploying version of WGA Notifications does not include the configuration feature.
