Sweden, archipelagos and Teraflops

When I think of Sweden I think of the beautiful coastline and and thousands of tiny little islands along the Swedish coast. Not anymore. This morning IBM and UmeƄ University announced the most powerful Windows-based computer in Europe being installed at the university's supercomputer center known as HPC2N. Scientists will use the powerful system aka. Akka for basic and applied research. And guess what, they run on a beta version of Windows HPC Server 2008. Linux is supported too.

While very high on the list of the Top500 most powerful supercomputers, this system is also at the top of the current Green500 list. Due to a new processor architecture from Intel, the system is amongst the most energy efficient architectures performing at 219 megaflops/watt. Wow!
