Visual Studio 11 UK Online Conference Pre-Reading Details
Background
This on-line conference will provide an overview of the key new features and capabilities that Visual Studio 11 offers software development teams, and the opportunity to ask questions to the UK Developer Tools team and partners. These include areas such as:
· Agile support, including the new Scrum template, planning tools, taskboards and real-time burndown and velocity charts.
· Storyboarding, feedback tool and IntelliTrace in production to help involve more people in the development lifecycle.
· Changes to the Visual Studio IDE to help simplify using the Visual Studio environment.
· New developer support for code reviews, context switching between work, support for additional unit test frameworks and more.
· Support for developers not using Visual Studio, e.g. Java developers using Eclipse.
· Getting the most out of the Coded UI testing tools for automated functional testing.
There will be something for almost anyone involved in software development, from Project Managers & Scrum Masters to developers and testers.
Agenda
The live aspect of the conference will take place on the 28th June 2012 from 13:00 – 15:00. This will be an online Q&A session to address questions relating to the videos below, with the speakers from the videos on line to answer questions and queries around Visual Studio 11 and Team Foundation Server 11. Questions can also be posted to @VisualStudioUK, using the hashtag #ukvs11conf.
Video 1: Total Development Management with Visual Studio 11 (38 mins)
In this session Richard Erwin introduces the key new features in the Visual Studio 11 IDE, an introduction to the new Agile planning tools, storyboarding support, My Work, Code Review, the new diff tool, feedback requests and IntelliTrace in production.
Video 2: Agile development with Visual Studio 11 (33 mins)
Giles Davies presents the new Agile planning tools, walking through the product backlog and sprint backlog, taking into account capacity and using the new task board. This session also looks at the new unit testing frameworks support in Visual Studio 11, showing MS Test, nUnit and XUnit tests being run side-by-side within Visual Studio.
Video 3: Visual Studio 11 – How to build robust Coded UI Tests (36 mins)
Danny Crone, from nFocus, demonstrates how to create automated functional tests using Coded UI Tests, showing how to maintain the UI Map and edit and customise the tests themselves to provide robust, maintainable functional tests.
Video 4: Take your development to the cloud with Team Foundation Service (38 mins)
Richard Erwin and Giles Davies introduce the new Team Foundation Service – Team Foundation Server in Windows Azure. This session covers the background and history of the service, including an insight into the challenges of migrating to the Cloud, and also walks through how to get setup and the functionality that’s provided.
Video 5: Visual Studio Team Foundation for Everyone (50 mins)
In this session Richard Fennel, from Black Marble, demonstrates how developers that are not using Visual Studio have full access to the capabilities of Team Foundation Server from other environments such as Eclipse or the command line, allowing a common code repository, requirement and bug tracking, automated build and reporting solution to work regardless of the chosen implementation technology and development platform.

Richard Erwin
Richard is an Application Lifecycle Management specialist and part of the Developer and Platform Evangelism Group at Microsoft UK. He’s been with Microsoft for over ten years, starting as a developer support engineer, troubleshooting and debugging complex customer development issues. Prior to joining Microsoft, Richard was a software engineer and gained a first class degree in Computer Science.
Giles Davies
Giles works at Microsoft UK as a technical specialist covering development tools, specializing in the full Application Lifecycle Management tooling of Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio. Prior to joining Microsoft in 2008, Giles had various roles including that of developer, technical lead, software architect, consultant and project manager, and has used a range of development processes including formal methods, Rational Unified Process, and Scrum.
Danny Crone
Danny Crone is the technical director of nFocus, the first UK testing consultancy to achieve Microsoft Gold Partner status as an ALM specialist. Danny, and nFocus, provide testing services in the Microsoft technology space.
Richard Fennell
Richard Fennell is the Engineering Director for Black Marble. Richard’s expertise in this area has been recognised by his award as a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) for Visual Studio (ALM) and as an ALM Ranger.
