SCVMM 2008 R2 Beta now available

Hot on the heals of the Windows Server 2008 R2 beta – you can now download the SCVMM 2008 R2 beta.  As well as adding the ability to manage installations of Windows Server 2008 R2 beta – this release of SCVMM adds the following features:

  • Support for live migrations and clustered shared volumes
  • Support for SAN migration in and out of clusters
  • Support for multiple LUNs per single iSCSI target
  • Support for new Hyper-V networking capabilities
  • Support for reusable port groups in VMWare VirtualCenter
  • Support for disjoint domains
  • Support for BITS compact server
  • New “Maintenance mode” feature

I really like this last one.  It allows you to put a Windows server into “maintenance mode”.  This migrates all the virtual machines off the computer (if it is in a cluster, otherwise it places the virtual machines into a saved state) and ensures that no new virtual machines are started on the system until you take it out of maintenance mode.  This way – if you need to change the hardware or configuration of a Hyper-V server you do not need to worry about running virtual machines while you work on it.
