Virtual machines pausing at launch under Virtual PC

If you are seeing a noticeable 'pause' when you start a virtual machine under Virtual PC - you may want to try going into the virtual machines settings and disabling automatic detection under the floppy setting. It seems that on some systems trying to access the floppy drive can take a considerable amount of time - and Virtual PC checks for the presence of a floppy disk at virtual machine launch by default.
