Released in 1996, Xenophage is an attempt by Apogee to provide an old school fighting game on the PC. I do not know why but I have never found fighting games on the PC to be anywhere as good as their console based equivalents – and Xenophage is no exception. While it has the best of intentions the game comes off feeling clunky and doesn’t play very well.
With a bizarre plot of a master alien race that has gathered together a collection of lesser races to battle in a holo-center to determine which race will have the right to continue breeding. Umm… Yeah.
The game plays acceptably under Virtual PC (a bit jerky here and there) and it runs in both VGA and SVGA modes. It does not work if you configure it to use the Sound Blaster for sound – but works if you select to use Adlib instead:
I can’t decide which screen shot I find more amusing – the slavering alien monster battling an inflatable clown, or the blocky, generic woman battling a large spider monster. Eerily enough the sound track is almost identical to that of Major Stryker and Duke Nukem II.
Anyway – if you really want to spend some time playing this game you can download it from ftp://ftp.3drealms.com/share/1xeno11.zip
