To install OS/2 Warp 4 under Virtual PC you will need to create a virtual machine with a 2GB virtual hard disk (if you use the new virtual machine wizard and tell it you are installing ‘OS/2′ it will create a 2GB virtual hard disk for you)
Next – you will need to get the three boot disks. You can either use the physical boot disks – or you can copy DISK0.DSK, DISK1_CD.DSK and DISK2.DSK from DISKIMGSOS235 on the OS/2 CD. These files can be used to boot off of directly – and will be much faster than using the physical boot disks.
Once you have booted off of the floppies you should accept the default partition configuration and boot off of the floppies again.
When you finally get to the ‘System Configuration’ page you select to use the ‘Video Graphics Array (VGA)’ (as the S3 Trio driver included with OS/2 is problematic). You should also select to install the IDE CD-ROM and Sound Blaster 16 (use default settings for the Sound Blaster). Later during the network configuration section – you will be able to just accept the default network driver that OS/2 Warp 4 will offer.
Once you have finished the operating system installation – you should download and unpack: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/video/eng30316.zip. Copy the contents of DISK1 to a floppy (or use WinImage – http://www.winimage.com – to create a virtual floppy disk) and label the floppy ‘S3 DRV1′. Then put this floppy in the virtual machine, open an OS/2 command prompt and run ‘A:setup’. Select to ‘Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type’ and reboot the virtual machine when you are done. The best display setting to use with this driver is 800 x 600 x 65536.
