Installing OS/2 Warp 3 Connect under Virtual PC 2004

The other day I explained how to install OS/2 Warp 3 red and blue under Virtual PC 2004 (https://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2004/12/07.aspx). OS/2 Warp 3 connect is very similar to OS/2 Warp 3 Blue edition - however it also has support for networking out of the box.

In order to install OS/2 Warp 3 Connect you should follow the directions provided in my previous post - but after selecting the hardware you will be prompted with the question:'Do you want to install networking support?'. You should select 'Yes'.

You will then be presented with a number of networking options to install. Select TCP/IP and IBM Peer for OS/2 if you are interested in having file sharing as well.

Next you will be prompted to select the network adapter to install. OS/2 Warp 3 Connect does not have the correct driver on the install CD - so you will need to download the driver from https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/network/dc21x4.zip and unzip it on to a floppy disk. You should then click 'Other Adapter' under OS/2 and tell it to load the driver off of 'A:'. On the driver selection page make sure to change 'Type of LAN:' to 'Ethernet' and hit OK. You should then hit 'Settings' and hit 'OK' without changing anything (the OS/2 install will complain if you do not do this.)

You should then use the little right arrow down the bottom of the page to go through all the settings (there should be 6 pages total). A couple of important things to know here are:

  • You will have the option to select 'NetBIOS' or 'NetBIOS over TCP/IP'. If it is important for you to use one of these - make sure that you select the correct one here - as the OS/2 configuration utility for this is broken and will not allow you to easily change this later.
  • OS/2 Warp 3 Connect does not support DHCP out of the box. So if you want to use shared networking (NAT) you will need to manually configure the virtual machine to use an IP address in the 192.168.131.x range with a gateway of 192.168.131.254.
  • If you want to cut 'n' paste data as you are filling out these settings you should use 'Ctrl + Insert' for copy and 'Shift + Insert' for paste

When you are done with configuring these settings - hit 'Install'.

After a while OS/2 will automatically reboot - but you have no CD configured so before the install tries to continue you will need to hit 'ALT F1' when 'OS/2' is displayed in text in the top left hand corner. Then Select 'C' from the 'RECOVERY CHOICES' menu

When you get to the command prompt type in 'TEDIT CONFIG.SYS' - scroll to the bottom of the file and add 'BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT' - and hit 'F2' to save and 'F3' to exit. Then reset the virtual machine. It will boot and complete installation.

Finally you will need to install the updated video driver as mentioned in my previous post about OS/2.
