Parallel Data Warehouse Adds Connection to BI Tools for Informatica, SAP Business Objects

imageMicrosoft made several important announcements related to our SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) offerings last week.

  • Microsoft announced the release of Appliance Update 2 for PDW with new features and connectors to third party BI tools that enable customers to use PDW seamlessly in heterogeneous BI and ETL (Extract, Load and Transform) environments, in addition to the first class integration with Microsoft BI products.  Customers can now leverage existing investments in BI while expanding their Data Warehouse affordably with PDW.
  • Microsoft is excited to inform customers that Dell has announced a new PDW appliance that offers customers hardware choice, massive scalability beyond 600 TB and low TCO with a starting price of under $12,000 per TB of user data.

Appliance Update 2

PDW’s Appliance Update 2, offers customers several often requested T-SQL features, like support for multi-statement batches, T-SQL variables, temporary tables, conditional logic and control flow statements.  In addition, two new high speed connectors are now available for Informatica and SAP Business Objects.  Microstrategy already has a customized connector for PDW certified by Microsoft since November 2010.  Combined, these new features enable customers to use PDW seamlessly in heterogeneous BI environments in addition to the existing integration with Microsoft BI products.  Customers can now leverage existing investments in BI while expanding their Data Warehouse affordably with PDW.

The second update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Parallel Data Warehouse has already Released to Manufacture (RTM) and is now in the hands of our Hardware Vendors (HP and Dell).

Dell’s PDW Appliance

The Dell PDW Appliance provides customer with yet another hardware option in Microsoft’s extensive partner offerings.  The new Dell Parallel Data Warehouse appliance offers customers:

  • Flexibility and choice – offering customers more hardware options for MPP data warehousing
  • Massive scalability, supporting over 600 TB of user data capacity
  • Breakthrough performance thanks to the latest Intel Westmere processors
  • Low cost with appliances starting under $12,000 per terabyte of user data.
