Roadmap – Updates Announced for Data Center at Tech•Ed

imageAnnouncements this week at Tech•Ed included new products for System Center, Forefront, and new support for Linux-based CentOS in Hyper-V.

The announcements include:

  • System Center Orchestrator (formerly Opalis) provides an IT process automation platform that orchestrates workflows across systems and tasks. This enables customers to lower their costs while improving datacenter service reliability and predictability. Microsoft will release a beta of System Center Orchestrator 2012 in June 2011.
  • Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 simplifies and improves endpoint protection, helping protect customers against the latest threats, including zero-day attacks, while greatly reducing infrastructure costs. It was built on System Center Configuration Manager 2012 and allows customers to use their existing client management infrastructure to deploy and manage endpoint protection. Microsoft today released a beta for Forefront Endpoint Protection 2012, offering real-time reporting and alerts, as well as role-based access controls.   • Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V support for Linux-based CentOS provides customers who run mixed-environments consisting of Linux and Windows — specifically hosters — the added choice to consolidate on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, and to build and manage robust virtualization and mixed-cloud environments. Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V support for Linux-based CentOS is available today. Customers can find more information on the Microsoft Openness blog
  • Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit provides data and analysis on IT infrastructure to simplify the planning process needed to migrate existing software to a virtualized or cloud-based environment. Key features in version 6.0 of the MAP Toolkit include the ability to provide consolidation guidance for Hyper-V Cloud Fast Track infrastructures, including computing power, network and storage architectures. Microsoft will release a beta of the MAP Toolkit 6.0 on May 31, 2011. Customers can find more information on the MAP website.
  • There are now additional supported hypervisor scenarios for virtualized Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, including Unified Messaging. This combines Exchange’s high-availability solutions, Database Availability Groups, with hypervisor-based clustering and failover solutions. Organizations planning to virtualize their Exchange 2010 deployments can get details from The Exchange Team Blog.
  • New license mobility options will become available July 1, 2011, through Microsoft Volume Licensing agreements with an active Software Assurance benefit. The new options will provide customers with the flexibility to deploy application services on-premises or through hosted service providers in the cloud.
