Windows Azure Dev Camp Fall 2011 Series – Content & Links

Thanks to everyone who attended the Fall 2011 Series of Windows Azure Dev Camp events on the US east coast! The US Cloud team enjoyed traveling to Raleigh, Farmington, NYC, Philly, & Chevy Chase to visit folks and deliver this fun tour of cloud computing and Windows Azure concepts.  We had a great time helping organize the events and leading attendees through the fun Rock Paper Azure Challenge coding contest.

The content from the event is now available!

Here are the links to the demos referenced during the event:

Session 1: Windows Azure Overview

Hello World

No code to share!  Just do a “File->New->Project->Windows Azure Project” and have fun!

BabelcamBabelcam

This app demonstrates using Windows Azure to support a Windows Phone app.  The app allows you to take a picture of text and turn it into characters - you can translate the text into a different language. Using push notifications you can get instant feedback within the application.

BabelCam is included in the Windows Phone Toolkit for Windows Azure.  Download the toolkit here: https://watoolkitwp7.codeplex.com

Babelcam has a lengthy setup to get it working, but it is mostly straightforward.  The toolkit installation should verify that you have all needed dependencies on your machine (Visual Studio, Azure SDK, Azure tools, etc, etc.).  You will then need to obtain an application IDs for Project Hawaii (OCR service from Microsoft) and the Bing Translation service.

Once you have obtained and jotted down the two application IDs, follow the Babelcam walkthrough instructions here.

tanksterTankster

The Tankster game is a proof-of-concept game that shows how Windows Azure can be used to build great casual and social games.  It is included as part of the Windows Azure Toolkit for Social Games.   You can play a hosted instance of the game at: https://www.tankster.net/

Thuzi: Azure Helpers

Thuzi built this toolkit as a result of the work they did for the Outback Steakhouse Facebook app. You can find it here: https://azuretoolkit.codeplex.com/

Session 2: Data & Storage In The Cloud

All demos during this session were done using the SQL Azure management portal and the SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio tool. There is no code to share.  Just create a SQL Azure database in the portal and browse around!

Session 3: Windows Azure Compute

GuestBookWindows Azure GuestBook

The GuestBook application is part of the Windows Azure Training Kit.  Once downloaded, open Windows Explorer and navigate to “<WhereverYouInstalledIt>\Demos\WindowsAzureGuestBookVS2010\code” and open the “GuestBook.sln” solution file.
