Thousands of schools will now be able to access their SIMS management information system (MIS) from wherever they choose using the Microsoft Azure platform, following an agreement between Microsoft and Capita SIMS, announced at Bett 2015 in London.

The announcement means that Capita SIMS, the company that supplies 22,000 schools with an MIS to help to manage pupil progress tracking, assessment, registration and timetabling, will use Microsoft Azure’s cloud for its Hosted SIMS solution.  The partnership will also cover the SIMS financial management system, FMS.

This tie up of two leaders in the education sector will enable a classroom teacher or head to use nearly any device they use for work – PC, Apple Mac, Surface, or tablet – to access their SIMS or FMS system from wherever they are. Whether recording pupil information or analysing how well a child or year group is doing, schools can now offer staff much more choice in how they manage these tasks.

Phil Neal, managing director of Capita SIMS, said: “The world is increasingly mobile and this has an impact on every job, including teaching.  Tens of thousands of teachers access SIMS every day to help them do their jobs. Following this agreement, they will have the ability to access it from any device to teach or to plan their lessons and support their pupils’ achievement.

“We selected Microsoft Azure as it has proven to be the most secure, reliable hosting platform across many sectors and we believe it offers the most affordable solution for our SIMS and FMS customers. We know it will give our customer base what they want from cloud technology; flexibility at a reasonable price and freedom from server maintenance, data backup and software upgrades.”

Steve Beswick, director of education for Microsoft UK, said: “This move means that teachers will now benefit from the flexibility of accessing SIMS from wherever and whenever they choose and further puts Microsoft at the heart of education in the UK. The Microsoft Azure cloud platform is already extensively used in the UK education sector – it underpins the UCAS system as well as Microsoft services used in schools such as Office 365, Skype and OneNote.”
