April 12th 2013 was the day students took over Building 3 at Microsoft UK and showed that when they are in charge of their own learning children excel and inspire. This is what happened at our first ever Koduthon, where students from schools from around the country showed us they amazing Kodu skills. Despite their ages ranging from 9-15, all had something to offer and learnt from each other. This illustrated how accommodating Kodu is as an application for a range of ages. Another interesting observation was how little input teachers needed to give to support their students, Kodu is so intuitive that it students learn for themselves by just ‘playing’. The teachers had to make to do with spending their time munching through a selection of ‘pick n mix’ sweets. Apparently. They had to test on health and safety grounds! Students did have some input from the ‘Queen of Kodu’, Nicki Maddams @geekynicki who showed them some of the new water features, characters and objects that are available in the latest download of Kodu. Everyone then set about creating a game based on these new features, the results of the students endeavours can be seen on the Kodu Gamelab site.
