The University of Manchester’s Genetic Epidemiology department needed a portal to help share knowledge and learning material but like many organisations looking for a such a solution needed to be sure that the information it contained is accurate and valuable and error free.
Of course, one of the design issues to consider when thinking about a tool that involves multiple users uploading data to is to keep it as simple and straightforward as possible to avoid the issues of errors when aggregating data. So isn’t it a bonus if you are able to use familiar tools and applications which remove much of the effort from the process and leaves more time for people to focus on their core activities?
On top of this is the fact that a department responsible for maintaining the integrity of the learning materials doesn’t always have the necessary resources to maintain and integrate the technology so therefore requires readily available software that is focused around the academics rather than the technologists in the department.
This case study is a great example of how a university can use the features of MOSS 2007 to create a world class portal with enormous benefits to the university.
