Why the Scottish Government is turning to tablets to get more done

Mobile working in a flexible, collaborative environment is the future of public sector productivity – and the Scottish Government is looking to lead the way.

Like all public sector organisations, the Scottish Government needed to find ways to reduce costs while improving services – mobile working offers a way to accomplish goals at once. The Scottish Government recently worked with Microsoft Partner Trustmarque to deploy a selection of Windows 8 tablets to about 20 executives and 20 technicians.

Andy McClintock, chief technology officer at the Scottish Government, said staff wanted to use the latest mobile technology, to allow them to work flexibly and collaborate easily. But the Scottish Government needed to be sure civil servants were working in a secure, manageable environment. Windows 8 tablets offered a way for the Scottish Government to do both.

How is flexible working empowering Scottish Government staff?

  • Tablets make workers more efficient: Staff can work from the field, taking on tasks as and when they arise.
  • Tablets make workers more effective: Even when they’re working on the fly, staff can trust that their work is being saved automatically, in an Impact Level 3 secure environment.
  • Tablets make IT services more cost-effective: The Scottish Government can deliver IT services to workers in less time, freeing up resources for other projects. While the proof-of-concept was small, but well-received. Scottish Government say they plan to keep going, aiming to enable flexible working throughout the organisation.
