Continued Transformation at Miami-Dade County Public Schools

While we tend to keep the majority of the posts of this blog focussed on UK education, occasionally we cast our gaze to other corners of the globe to see how teachers and schools in other countries are using technology to transform their classrooms and engage the minds of their students. One example of this that we'd like to share with you comes from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district in Florida, USA.

Miame-Dade Schools

In the summer of 2014, over 50,000 devices were deployed in classrooms, along with 11,000 interactive boards, all across the schools within Miami-Dade county. The following case study shows the impact technology has had not only on the students’ technical capabilities but also their attitude towards learning:

Sean Gallagan, Principal of iTech, said that his vision “is to have students that are world class in the use of technology”. He went added, “Our kids are going to be graduating with the skill set to enter not only college and university, but the world of work, because we’ve already prepared them with the skills the need, because of the district’s partnership with Microsoft and the products that Microsoft offers.” – Sean Gallagan, Principal of iTech

Xavier Balerdi, a 9th Grade Teacher at iTech spoke of the noticeable transformation in his classroom. “It’s exciting to see them going from not knowing how to write an email, to now building their own website.”

iTech @ Thomas A. Edison Educational Center, a Miami-Dade Magnet High School, provides students with the opportunity to conduct real-world field studies, research and projects in an environment that models today’s successful businesses.
