Sophie Baillie (Edinburgh University)

A brilliant example of how effective and beneficial Student Advantage* can be is Sophie Baillie’s experience. Sophie is a recent graduate from Edinburgh University, she is really passionate about how valuable the package can be to a student.

Sophie was already familiar with Microsoft Technology when she begun University, however she did not purchase the Office Package. Once she had heard about the fact that she could get access to Office 2013 through Student Advantage from a friend at another University, she quickly downloaded the software from her Universities IT department. Being so used to Microsoft Software she found it very easy to use “it wasn’t difficult, it just made sense!”

Group projects were easy to organise as they were placed in OneDrive, enabling all students to work on the documents simultaneously. Sophie’s University email system already operated on Office 365 and so the students could share their work within the cloud. The whole system ‘worked seamlessly’.

Microsoft Office 2013, provided through Student Advantage, enabled Sophie’s essays to be edited and saved in the Cloud. This ensured she did not have multiple draft versions and never lost any work. The software allowed her to quickly pick up on work where she had left off, providing a generally quicker and more efficient way to work. Sophie managed to avoid every student’s worst nightmare, losing a nearly finished essay hours before the deadline!

Now graduated, Sophie feels her deep understanding of Microsoft Office will assist her in her future career. She believes everyone needs the skills she has developed to be successful in today’s competitive job market. Sophie highlighted the importance of students gaining an understanding of the cloud and online services Microsoft provide.

Sophie has recently undertaken a Summer Placement with Diamond Cooper, where she has been able to rely on the IT skills she has developed from using Microsoft Office. The company operate using Microsoft software on their computers, with which she is now fluent. Her role replies on being able to share lots of documents and spreadsheets. Having knowledge and experience using the Cloud has enhanced her ability within this role, she can easily navigate herself around multi-client documents. When asked if she feels Microsoft Office has helped her within her future career she says “Yes, everyone needs these skills!”

Sophie will begin her Masters at ‘Imperial College London’ in September. And when asked if she would switch to another product she claimed “it would be like taking a step back with technology”. She is definite that when she leaves full time education she will purchase the Office Package.

As a final message for all students out there, she believes it is important to realise the need to be proactive. Its student’s responsibilities to tell other students about this amazing resource available to them, for free! And those students who are in the same position as Sophie, who have taken full use of the Student Advantage package, need to be evangelists about their experience. Spread the word!
