SP1 VPC Performance Improvement options

Hello all, Tim’s been doing some investigation with the Product Group in relation to VPC performance – more detailed notes will be published following Convergence, however for now Tim has put together some points which will help.

Turn off services not required (via Programs/Administrator Tools/Services).

Right click on service and select properties and set to manual and stop if running.

1. Dynamics AX 2009 Synchronization Service – If you don’t need to show the Project Server Integration.

2. Demand Planner Collaboration Server – If you don’t’ want to demo this.

3. SQL Full Text Search

4. Microsoft Office Project Server Queue Service – If you don’t need to show the Project Server Integration - Set these to manual/disable otherwise they will restart.

5. Microsoft Office Project Server Events Service – If you don’t need to show the Project Server Integration – Set these to manual/disable otherwise they will restart.

6. Message Queuing -  If you don’t need to show the Project Server Integration

7. SQL VSS Writer

8. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) – If you don’t want to show the mail integration.

9. Office SharePoint Server Search – If you don’t want to show the MOSS search.

10. Planning Process Service – If you don’t’ want to show PPS Planning.

SQL will take a lot of the memory on the machine so you can do three things. First, go into SQL Management Studio, log in to Database Engine and then expand databases to list all dbs present.

1 Take some databases offline that you don’t need. Select database, right click, Tasks, Take offline.

a. DynMobile if you don’t want to show the Dynamics Mobile bits or set them up.

b. ManagementReporter and ManagementReporter Demo if you don’t want show the PPS Management Reporter.

c. PPSPlanningService and PPSPlanning System if you don’t’ want to show PPS Planning.

d. ProjectSErver_Archive, ProjectServer_Draft, ProjectServer_Published, ProjectServer_Reporting if you won’t want to show Project Server, turn off the service first as listed above.

e. AXTS if you don’t want to show the Version Control in AX.

2 Stop the SQL Server Agent (right click, STOP). This is running a few jobs for the Dynamics Mobile to replicate data so you won’t need this. Also this will stop the VSS integration for Source Code Control in AX if you need to show this. If you want to avoid stopping this each time you start the VPC. Turn the service to manual through the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

3 Set the SQL Memory to a max of between 512-768 depending on how many databases you took offline. This will stop SQL taking as much memory as is on the VPC before other services like IIS and AOS can get some.

4 Re-Start the SQL Service to release the memory that it has taken.
