Topological Qubits are an approach to Quantum Computing that is looking to use quasi-particles called Majorana Fermions to create truly scalable qubit. Topological Qubits are an approach to Quantum Computing that is looking to use quasi-particles called Majorana Fermions to create truly scalable qubit architectures. These quasi-particles were predicted by Italian physicist Ettore Majorana who worked on neutrino masses. On March 25, 1938, he disappeared under mysterious circumstances while going by ship from Palermo to Naples.

His prediction was that under certain conditions, Majorana fermions can appear as the collective movement of several individual particles, not a single one. This opens up the potential for using these Majorana's as robust qubits within a quantum computer where the quantum state information is encoded in the topology of these quasi-particles - hence Topological Quantum Computing.

Microsoft has been working for over 10 years on the development of the theory, physics and engineering of Topological Quantum Computing, with the goal of building a truly scalable quantum computer.
In this meetup, Dr Julie Love from Microsoft's Quantum Computing team in Seattle will provide an accessible overview what quantum computing is, how it works, what the implications and applications and quantum are, and how Microsoft's is progressing with Topological Quantum Computing and the development of a full stack solution including applications and algorithm development, software engineering and simulator environments.
