Oh, dear. I’ve got some news.

This is the news: I have decided that I am going to do another job at Microsoft, so I won’t be your certification front-man anymore. This is not a particularly big deal for Microsoft, or Microsoft Learning, or for you. But it is for me! I will miss this job a lot.

That is because I have one of the best jobs ever, here in Microsoft Learning. There are all sorts of interesting and challenging and good parts of my job, but this blog—a side thing I started at the hounding of my manager Deborah—and talking to you guys at events and in live meetings, have turned out to be my favorite bits, because of how fun you are. For a while I didn’t really think real people were reading this, like it was a fluke when someone would comment. But now I do! I think you’re reading this.

Raise your hand if you’re reading this.

Surressly. Raise a paw.

My new job—doing something in the windows embedded group, i'll tell you more about it later—should be cool, and I’m excited about it. But, clearly, I won’t be talking about certification anymore, and I won’t be able to answer your certification questions. That makes me sad, because I like certification, and I like you, and your questions.

In any case, Microsoft Learning will continue to be great, with all the people who do the work around here. The team of people who design and make our certifications are still here, I love them. They are smart, and care a lot. The people who are working on anti-piracy, and marketing offers like Second Shot, and awesome things like performance-based testing, training kits and books, and courses, and your program, your welcome kits, are still here. These are great people, MCPeeps. I'm proud to have worked on the certification program, and with these people. I'll miss them, too.

So, that’s my news.

You can put your paw down, now. I seen it.

I will keep this blog, I think, but when I leave, I’m not sure what I’ll have to say, if I can't say it to you, with your little wallet cards and exam numbers, panty-bunching and freak outs. I think you are resourceful, warm, straightforward, and fair with your feedback--good or bad, MCPs. I'll miss you!

I will add more tomorrow about all this. But I wanted to tell you my news.

Until then, I remain,
Your friend,

SNV31780OT: Here is a picture of a wombat sitting by the road in Australia.

  6. Yanze says:

Wish you all the best Trika!

But someone should keep this alive (and with ‘this’ I mean some front position person blogging about certifications), don’t leave us alone in the dark …

  7. Pollerunner says:

For you I hope the best in your new job, but for certification as a hole it is a big loos. Where are we now going to get this informantion? I think we will fall back to the time when nobody gave a cent for the MCP’s needs

  8. Ben says:

    Trika we’ll miss you πŸ™

You’ve been superb at putting up with some of the rubbish people through your way. Your always helpful and full of fun information.

Congrats on the new job and I hope everything goes the way you want it to! I’ll defiantly be keeping this blog in my reader so make sure you keep posting things no matter how random or irrelevant.

Good bye and thanks for all the codes πŸ˜‰

  9. Meile says:

Trika, You were one pretty good source on information about the Microsoft Certifications. That will surely be missed.

Congrats on the new job, keep up the good work.

  10. BEACHDBA says:

Please ensure your replacement is funny.  That bit about the name loves was an all timer.

Thanks for the laughs.  See you when you get your own late-night talk show.

  11. John Miller says:

Good luck! You have been one of the most fun (and still informative) authors to read in my blog roll!

  12. Eric D says:

How come my certification is loosing its value now it does not stand for you anymore. but ahhhh, well, aahhh, We have to keep this certification thing up just for the remembrance of you…

    Congratulations on the new job.

  13. Deniz says:

First of all I hope you are going to like your new job as much as you did like this job.

Second of all, why do you think it is no

big deal for us? Well maybe not personally but at least from a professional point of view.

Your blog is in my RSS-Reader and the information you gave where very useful.

So it is a big deal for us if your successor wont’t blog as good as you did.

  14. Don says:

    Say it ain’t so!!!!!!

While I wish you all the best, I am crushed.  After almost ever blog post I say to someone here at the office "I love Trika Harms Zum Spreckel", to which they reply "What did you call me?"

  15. You gave Microsoft Learning and the Certification Program a personality. Thank you for all the live meetings and answering the same questions over and over again. Thank you for your humor; as I know personally it helped make our days more tolerable knowing it could always be worse: We could be locked in a bathroom somewhere in another country! I mean, let’s face it: you are the only person who can make a week long story out of a piece of illegal rotting fruit – and make it funny!! Thank you for listening. When any of us had ideas about MSL or certifications, you listened and tried (and normally succeeded) in making something happen for us. You are a benefit that should have been listed on the MCP’s benefit section. Most of all, I want to thank you for being my friend. Although reading your insane witty humor concerning MS certifications will change, our friendship will not. I am a fan. I am your friend. I am a Trikanite.

  16. Elias Mereb says:

Trika, thanks a lot for all the things you have done for us.

I wish you success in your new job role.

    We’ll miss you!!!

    Take Care!

  17. AL says:

O NOEZ! But you make reading about certification FUN. You must keep up some kind of blog. No really.

  18. Trika! Congratulations on your new gig. I know that you will be embedding little bits of your humor into every copy of Windows Embedded that goes out from now on.

This is a big loss for the MCP community though. You were certainly the best conduit for MS certification happenings and a great voice of us peeps.

Don’t stop blogging though. MCPs <3 embedded devices

  19. Liza says:

We’ll miss you!  But congrats on the new job, enjoy it!  Thanks for the hat and for today’s wombat pic.

  20. Lee... says:

I for one will miss your humour, wit and intelligence.

Keep communicating, keep thinking, keep learning, the future is yours, grasp it and make the best of it.

In a left brained environment, you were the right brain for the job.

Take care, I know were gonna miss ya…

  21. Hi Trika-

  28. JRedmond says:

This sucks, we will the lose one decent place to get information on certifications.  Please stay, this is a big hit to MS Learning.

  29. WallyTgoat says:

Drat!  I will miss your updates Trika, but I am happy for you.  I do hope you keep writing though.  You would be surprised at what passes for good entertainment these days. (Watch some TV and you will understand…)  Anywho, GL with the new digs and when it gets tough remember a newfound battle cry… SPORK!

  30. Helmer says:

    Congrats with your new job!!

But ehh..who’s going to keep us up2date about the certification stuff? Will there be a ‘new Trikah’??

    First Georgeo…now you…who’s next?

  31. Congrats on the job change. Has it been 2 years already? πŸ˜‰

    Good luck!

  32. bwatson says:

Trika, I think I speak for everyone at Microsoft Learning when I say you will be tremendously missed! As your now former manager, I can appreciate that the Microsoft way is to encourage our best and brightest to take on new challenges but we will still miss your wit and charm.

    Ben Watson,

    Director – Microsoft Learning

  33. Toto Vo says:

This blog is one of the best sources for information about Microsoft certifications. I hope you enjoy your new role as much as you seemed to have enjoyed this one.

  34. Hi Trika

A very big congrats on the new job – I am sure the embedded team are better for it. You will be missed in MSL I am sure. You will still have to find a way to come to teched’s and techready’s πŸ™‚

  35. Rodrigo Borges says:

Wish you all the best on this new job…

    Rodrigo – Brazil

  36. Dnag, and I had only just found your blog after Sydney… Hope all goes well with the ne job

BTW, on the Wombat meme.. They do square poos. Seriously, their poo comes out as little cubes. Not only that, they use their hard asses to kill when cornered. They just back the victim against something hard. talk about stuck between a rock and a hard place.

the things you learn at Australia Zoo… That’s what my daughter remembers, not all the crocodiles, kangaroos, elephants or tigers. Just Wombats and their square poo

  37. Pete Calvert says:

Hey Trika – will you still get to travel to Tech.Ed? and Tech.Ed Oz?

I’m glad I actually got to catch up with you, all too briefly, in Sydney, and even more so if your move curtails your globetrotting.

All the best for the job shift and hope the wombats made it back with you safely πŸ˜‰

  38. Andrew Jones says:

Best of luck with the new job. Hope you continue your blog, as it always brings a smile to my face.

  39. Diego says:

I wish the best for you! All MCP will miss you and your help!

    Diego, Brazil !

Ps.: Ty for the help on the MDOP πŸ˜‰

  40. Trika,

Who are we to give our cap suggestions to now?

I hope you enjoy your new position.

Congratulations (assuming it was your choice to move).

    — Larry "Since 1857" West

  41. Ken W says:

Congrats on the new job, we’ll all miss you here.

Who is going to be the new front person for MS certifications?  And will they be as good as you?

  42. Simone says:

*Sigh* Good luck for the new job Trika…

  43. Wow, and I literally just got my Microsoft Certified Trika cert, and now this!

This is great though! I look forward to this blog being filled with cool and interested embedded stories (Just because the hat changes, doesn’t mean you have to! :))

What everyone has said is true, and seriously – I know that isn’t a wombat.   You put a hamster into a little cage-type area and took a really blown up picture to create that!

  44. Rob.au says:

Congratulations Trika.  I can’t really add much to the above… your blog’s always an entertaining read and an impressive mix of useful and useless information. πŸ™‚

From someone who’s done a bit of time in a customer service role, your calm and frank responses to the occasionally agitated hoardes has always struck me as a great example of how to handle such things… and that’s probably why you’ve found people to be fair with their feedback.

More often than not we customers just want acknowledgement that problems exist and are being addressed and it’s surprising how many companies find this to be too difficult.  I never would have expected this kind of thing from Microsoft before I stumbled across your blog.

Now be honest… it was the ungracious hospitality of our possums that was the beginning of the end, wasn’t it? πŸ˜›

  45. Pierre says:

    Hi Trika!

Damm..thats both an excellent news and a pretty sad one all together!

may i clarify things a little: my offer for a FREE COFFEE here in paris still stands up, it wasn’t at all interested, but then again i might change the coffe for something stronger to make the sorrows go away!!!

i sincerely hope you’ll keep up the blog, or at least host a new one, for us to get some fun out of a pretty dull day at work!

like much other of your blog readers, i did came here for prime informations on MSL and to get some answers i couldn t get anywhere else, but i sure came most of the time just to see what was up with the funniest MS rep i know!!!

and i do know quite a few good fellows here in MS France πŸ™‚ …but the award for funniest Blogger is a sure shot for you!!!!

we will definitively miss you, your humour, your courrage to face us and our stupid (and very often repeated questions)…

best wishes for your future job, you might just end dragging everyone into Windows Embedded stuff πŸ™‚

let us know if you plan on hostin a WE Blog, as evene if i don’t particularly work on it, i sure will be following your POASTS!!!

best regards and best wishes from france.

Pierre (about to go and have a blast at a Madonna concert!)

  60. bertieb says:

Gutted.  But all the very best with your new role!

  61. Wesc says:

I remember when we were all up in arms over the switch of testing providers. You swooped in with a little humor and self deprecation, and left us with no way to still be cranky whiners about it. I thought to myself "Oh, she’s good. She’s really, really good."

You’ll be a tough act to follow. You’ve done a great job and turned a dry, boring subject into something fun to read about. Good luck in the future!

  62. trikah@microsoft.com says:

Thank you for all the nice notes. I’m going to print this out and carry it around all the time. That’s cool, right?

  63. Andy says:

That’s great for you, a bummer for us. I enjoyed meeting you @ TechEd 2008. Good luck in your new group and never forget Charlie Red Pants. πŸ™‚
