For your less advanced colleagues…

…like me, who spend all day in Office rather than running hypervisor on bare metal. I told a colleague in our business worker certification team that I’d let people know that we have opportunities for Office 2007 users to get certified for free, and help the exam development process, by taking the beta exams* for two of our new Microsoft Business Certifications.

  • Exam 77-602  MCAS: Using Microsoft Office Excel 2007

  • Exam 77-603  MCAS: Using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007

YT took the Word beta (passed!) and the PowerPoint beta (I don’t have my results yet) and it was fun.

How to participate: Beta seats are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no cost to take a beta. Sometimes they are not available in every country. To find a test center and register by e-mail or phone<updates 7/11/2007 in italics>, see the list of participating centers in UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, and Hong Kong, below. No special code is needed to register for the beta exam. If you could go ahead and send your questions to (and not to me), that would be greaaaaaat.  How to prepare:  See the prep guides linked below:

An update from Barbara:

  1. Hi Trika,

I tried to register on the Certiport web site, but I could not figure out how :(. How does the registration work?

  2. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

I thought I might take the exams to help in my part-time teaching gigs.

Here is the e-mail reply I got from

You need to call the nearest test center and schedule an appointment. The link for the test centers should be provided in the blog. If not, it’s here:

    Barbara Winter

    Product Planner /  Program Manager

Microsoft Business Certifications  |  Microsoft Learning Vendor of Approved Courseware Program

I emailed the Indianapolis center and got the following reply:

We are no longer offering the 2007 beta exams.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

    Sabrina Dahl

Makes me glad Certiport is not handling the regular Microsoft exams. If one just compares Certiport to Prometric (forgetting about Vue), Prometric comes off looking pretty good.

  3. Thank you Larry. I’ll call the test center tomorrow. There’s only one in Germany for the Office beta exams, but fortunately it’s ony 1 hour away from here :).

  4. Lukas Beeler says:

The don’t have a single testcenter in Switzerland πŸ™

  5. Mike says:

    Congrats on your pass, Trika!

  6. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

    You’re welcome, Mathias.

My nearest Office beta site is about 130 miles (~200 km) away, which, if I was driving like a German, would be only one hour away also. πŸ™‚

But since they no longer do betas, I’ll have to find another site.  πŸ™

Trika — Any chance of getting Certiport to update their site removing those that don’t offer the exams?

  7. Intheknow says:

The North American Beta period lasted mainly through Jan-Feb and powerpoint I believe was the first week of Mar. Those are my best guesstaments anyways as it really was a bit of a mess.

  8. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

The Prep. Guide states for Excel:

"The Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) Exam 77-602: Using Microsoft Office Excel 2007 is now available. It became available in March 2007."

Perhaps this was just a ploy by Trika to get us to appreciate Prometric.

It is better than Certiport, I’ll give her that, but that’s not saying much.

Still, for Trika and Barbara Winter to both not know the exams were already live (and the lady in Indianapolis also) – what does that say about Office certifications?

  9. Chance says:

    Hmm….should have used Pearson Vue.

  10. BT says:

Replied from representitive that the exam is not available in Hong Kong at this moment πŸ™

  11. Peter Read says:

Chance – heh well while I actually do agree (I took all of my MCSE exams through VUE), I don’t think this is a battle we’ll win, especially not if the tactic is the odd blog post πŸ˜‰

Larry – Ouch!  My nearest one’s a 3 minute walk from work.  As long as they have spaces (hey, why not, I actually quite like office2k7 esp compared to o2k3 πŸ™‚ )

  12. Hong Kong Boy says:

Same as BT.  I just followed the web page provided & called the test center.  The lady there told me that they know nothing about this exam from MS & they don’t know why MS publish their names in the exam center list.

MS really needs to improve the quality of communication with the testing centers.

  13. Barbara Winter says:

    thanks for your posts.

A couple of things I should clarify:

First, while we do currently have an Excel exam live, we are also running a beta of additional exam forms. I recognize that this is different than what we do with It Pro exams, so i wanted to clarigy.

Second, we do have a limited number of test centers running the betas. All of those listed on the site should be up and running, and

I’m sorry that some of you are experiencing problems registering. If listed test centers are not offereing the betas, please feel free to cntact me directly at

  14. Wow.. just looked at the number of testing centres available "down under" for this.. 3 – in a country the size of the US (no.. not with the same population – but I mean really!)

And not only that .. but the 3 centres – one in Melbourne, one in Perth and one in Rockhampton? I mean Rocky is good and all..nice steaks.. but surely better chance of actually having the numbers if it was in Sydney or Brisbane.

Looking at the list for NZ – there is one in Christchurch – why not Auckland or Wellington – it is already going to be at least a few hours drive for some people – but with a testing centre on only one island it will then mean a potential loooong ferry ride as well!

  15. Alice says:

    1. Why are these running through Certiport with SO FEW test centers (the nearest one is six hours away, even for me in a major population area of the USA), instead of PearsonVue and/or Prometric? (Prometric seriously sucks compared to PearsonVue, but at least they have more locations than these Certiport people.)

    2. What is this ‘free gift’ and why don’t other beta exam participants get it? πŸ™

  16. Larry West, MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, .... says:

Has anyone successfully signed up for one of these betas? If so, how did you do it?

  17. BT says:

To Larry West:  I’m still waiting for Barbara Winter’s reply.

  18. Peter Read says:

Larry – yes I’m doing them on Thursday.  Dropped the centre an e-mail and all sorted…

  19. Intheknow says:

    @ Larry West

"Makes me glad Certiport is not handling the regular Microsoft exams. If one just compares Certiport to Prometric (forgetting about Vue), Prometric comes off looking pretty good."

Well if that is how you feel, then what is your opinion that Prometric will now be handling all Microsoft Technical exams?

Here is the link from Prometric

Here is the link to the FAQ from PearsonVue.

  20. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

    To InTheKnow:

I hate the fact that Prometric is now in charge. Read my other posts. My comment was like "Compared to the Trabant, the Yugo was not so bad." Trika is trying to sell us a Yugo. (Ask your father if you don’t know what a Trabant or a Yugo are.) To carry the analogy further, Pearson Vue is like a Ford – somewhat reliable but could still stand improvement.

I am NOT saying that Prometric is any good. There was one Vue center here that said they will start offering Prometric, but unfortunately it is a for-profit school that only offers exams on Fridays (not weekends). If Prometric starts offering Saturday hours, then maybe I may soften my stance against Prometric.

  21. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

Note: Judging by the area code, you probably mean Fairfield, Connecticut, not Fairfield, California (unless the phone number is wrong).

This leaves out all of northern California, including the Silicon Valley.

So far everyone I have talked to no longer offers the exam or is closed for school vacation.

  22. Intheknow says:

That’s pretty much how I figured you felt I just wanted to make sure.

Unfortunately most businesses that run testing centers don’t have weekend hours. That isn’t a Vue or Prometric issue at all so even if a center offers both VUE services and Prometric you still end up with the same hours of availability.

Yes I am old enough to know what Yugo’s are at least, though Trabant doesn’t ring a bell.

  23. Peter Read says:

Just taken these, are we meant to get a score report (albeit without stating whether a pass or fail)

No objection if we are, just seems odd I got one since I thought question point weighting was sorted out post-beta?

  24. Larry West MCSD, MCPD, MCITP, MCTS, etc. says:

I just found out that the "free gift" is a 1GB thumb drive (beats the 32MB thumb drive I got from Microsoft Partner Readiness earlier this year).

I’m taking Excel on Aug. 8th and PowerPoint on Aug. 15th.

Best of luck to everyone and thank you Trika for posting this.

  25. Peter Read says:

That’s kinda cool if they support readyboost… Otherwise marketing’s gone a bit pete tong πŸ˜‰

  26. Peter Read says:

Apparently Vista MCAS beta is available from today too.

  27. Ken W says:

    Yep πŸ™‚

Took the Vista Beta, quite easy.  It’s more of a poweruser cert than a IT/technical cert.  But worth going for anyway, if you pass you get the MCAS cred πŸ™‚

  28. Ken W says:

Any news on the MCAP track, I’ve e-mailed but all they replied was the link to which isn’t very helpful.

Can you provide more info please?

  29. says:

Alice, the office certs are a separate program and therefore contracts for delivery are separate, and therefore Certiport delivers these exams. Don’t know the history; don’t expect any changes any time soon.

The planning teams will decide to do Charter certs or giveaways depending on how much they want people to participate in the betas, or if they are just really, really nice πŸ™‚ but not a given!

Ken, all, I don’t know much about this program and don’t know where to point you on all the ins and outs of certiport, etc. I’ll lobby for someone from that program to start blogging!

Ken, if you have a specific question e-mail it to me and I’ll see who we can find.

  30. Peter Read says:

Any idea what timescale we should expect results for these betas?  I took a couple on 19 July and no news.  Not overly concerned, just wondering.
