Windows 7 – Acer Aspire 9500 Wireless Drivers

So it would be silly to blog about the fact that Windows 7 is out there in beta now, and from everyone’s opinion its a solid build… very very solid build. I am running this on my production machine at work on a Lenovo T61p and on my Acer Aspire 9500.

One thing which continued to irritate the crap out of me was that I could not get the wireless drivers for the Aspire 9500 installed. Every time I tried to install the Vista drivers for wireless the process would timeout and error on me.

Finally I tried the Win XP drivers for the wireless and it worked flawlessly. The internet is running fast and happy now on my Aspire, and I have to say working better than ever.

This is a great OS and I am excited that people are sharing my enthusiasm, even some of the most critical people internally are also telling me how excited they are about Windows 7.

If you want to get a copy, download it now…

Hey, just ran across the exact same problem. I tried to install both the wireless drivers I could find on acer’s website. Neither of them worked though.

Do you have a link or some instructions on how you got your wireless to work?

Essentially I downloaded the relevant drivers for my model of laptop and chose to install the Windows XP version.

I went via device manager to do this manually.

    1. Click update driver

    2. Select driver to use (Browse to the Windows XP driver directory and select the .inf file in that folder.)

    3. Chose the Windows XP driver.

    Thats it…

Let me know if you have any issues…

Thanks, I never thought to select the .inf file itself, always let device manager find the driver from in the root 802abg or 802bg folder (depending on which driver I downloaded).

I’ll let you know how I get on when I try it at home later.

OKay, still didn’t work. Here are the exact steps I went through:

    1) I downloaded the wireless driver from (I’ve tried with both and )

    2) I unpacked them

    3) Ran Device Manager and double-clicked the problem network adapter device

    4) clicked ‘updated driver’ then ‘Browse my computer for the driver’

    5) Clicked ‘Browse’ and pointed to the folder where the driver is (it only lets me pick folders not an .ini file)

    6) Clicked ‘Let me choose the driver’

    7) It only gave me one option after that so had to choose it

    8) Driver times out when installing

Am I trying to install the wrong drivers? Is there a step that I’m missing (so I can select the .ini)?

Any help you can give is very welcome,

At point 7 there should be a button which says "Have Disk".

When you click on that you can navigate to the folder where the Windows XP drivers are and select them.

That should give you new drivers to intall.

Choose one of the new drivers and see if that will install. Thats how I got it to work.

Try that and let me know, I hope you get success from this.

YES!!! Finally got it working, I was trying to install the drivers from the acer support website that I linked to above. Not sure why they didn’t work but finally tracked down the model number for my wireless card and downloaded some drivers from the Intel website and followed the previous instructions and it worked.

Thanks for your help with this.
