Melbourne (Australia) 4 June, 2015 – Tech career marketplace, Gooroo, has released its May tech career & salary trend data.

The number of Australian tech jobs advertised dropped from a 37,566 high in April, to 31,497 in May - the first fall of 2015. This fall follows the trend in decreasing salaries already observed.

After April's decline of 1.6%, May saw advertised tech salaries fall by a further 3.1%. This brings the average Australian tech professional's salary to $99,860. At this time last year, jobs on offer were advertising at $111,447, over 10% higher.

This seems to be in line with the expected flat GDP report for the March quarter, however as Business Insider  has reported, Q1 exceeded expectations. Over the quarter the economy grew by 0.9%, leaving the annual rate of  growth at 2.3%. Analysts had been expecting a quarterly increase of 0.7% with annual growth of 2.0%. Economists are still identifying a general lull in business investment, but hoping that the GDP figures and low interest rates will help consumer and business boost confidence.

Compared with other regions, a similar trend is observed throughout the UK, with both advertised salaries and job growth falling over the last two months. The USA has also shown falling job growth although a slow rise in advertised salaries is noticeable.

In Australia, the usual larger falls in mobile technology salaries slowed slightly in May bringing its total fall to 8.7% from a January ‘15 base. Software development skills have continued to remain strong and salaries have been steady throughout this year.

Infrastructure skills however, whilst not falling as heavily as others earlier this year, saw the largest fall in salaries in May of 5.5%.

So far this year, the largest salary declines have been in Enterprise Systems (~18%) and Big Data & Databases (~15%).
