Windows Mobility resources - Vancouver .NET User Group Presentation

I had a great time last night delivering a mobility talk to the Vancouver .NET User Groups. Thanks for coming everyone and congrat's to the lucky winners of our prize draws!! If you didn't win something this time, keep coming as we'll be giving away more prizes at future presentations.

Here's some resources that I mentioned in my presentation:

MSDN Mobility Dev Centre

If you haven't checked out the "Dev Centres" on MSDN lately, definitely do so. They're an incredible resource as they bring together whitepapers, articles, blogs from people in that space, blogs from the product team, webcasts and chats. The mobility one is fantastic!

The mobile application I demonstrated:
Northwind Pocket Service: Field Service for Windows Mobile-Based Pocket PC - July 2004
Whitepaper available here and full source available here

Mobility Webcasts

https://msdn.microsoft.com/training/webcasts/

- On the above link look under the topics "Mobile Applications", ".NET Compact Framework", and "Pocket PC". In particular, last night we looked at a few cool things coming up in the 2.0 .NET Compact Framework. If you're interested in a more thorough presentation on .NETCF 2.0 have attend this upcoming webcast (Oct 19th).

OpenNETCF.org

If you're doing mobile development right now you'll likely want to have a look at OpenNETCF.org's Smart Device Framework as mentioned in my presentation. Download the framework, view the source, read the library. Oh, and as you can see here they've got support for WSE 2.0!! Very very cool!!

Pocket-Controller Professional

The tool I was using to display the PPC screen on my laptop and control the PPC from my laptop is called Pocket-Controller Professional and is available from SOTI.NET. Definitely a must if you want to use a real device in your demos. The task manager, clipboard sharing, and remote cmd shell is also very handy.

MapPoint Location Server

Here's the MLS home page along with a PDF detailing MLS. Of course, there's also an MSDN Developer Centre for MapPoint . There's also a couple of interesting things you'll find there. First of all, Bell Mobility and Microsoft have jointly developed a location provider plug-in for MLS for use on Bell's LBS network (if you're reading this from the US there's some info on Microsoft and Sprint's partnership here). This is great news!! Secondly, if you are an MSDN Universal, Enterprise, or Profesional subscriber you are eligible for a free subscription to MapPoint Web Service including 50,000 MapPoint Web Service transactions for commercial use!! There's also a managed newsgroup you'll have access to.

SQL Server CE

If you’re looking for more info on SQL Server CE here’s a few resources: There’s developer focused articles here, technical resources here, and you can download it here.

Thanks again to everyone who attended the Vancouver .NET User Group meeting, I’ll see you soon!!
