The Public Is A Lot Smarter Than Anyone Gives It Credit For

Quote from Philippe de Montebello director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York in a great article titled The Age Of Mass Intelligence from More Intelligent Life. One of the longest but best posts I have read in a long time with some interesting gems about how popular culture has become more and more cultured as our choices have exploded

  • One in nine of Britain’s adult population are regular listeners of Classic FM
  • 43 literary festivals in Britain in October alone
  • New York Metropolitan Opera transmitted eight operas to 935,000 people (in cinemas) this year
  • In 1999/2000, there were 24m visits to Britain’s biggest museums. In 2007/08, the figure was 40m.

One of the conclusions they draw is that dumbing down is nonsense which I agree with – now if I could just find time to stop reading voraciously on the web I may find some culture!

Anyway….I shall pay this magazine more attention in future as I’ve ignored to date. That’s what happens when you put Paris Hilton on the cover of a serious magazine!

sidenote: they say they have a blog but they don’t. tip….a blog HAS to have an RSS feed to be worthy of the name
