BBC iPlayer in beta

Well it's got a lot of press recently, largely for being Windows only, but the BBC's iPlayer is now out in beta. Though it doesn't look like the cool demo that was shown at Mix06, it does look promising in terms of the service:

BBC iPlayer Beta will let you download a wide range of BBC television programmes for free from the last seven days.

It's a great example of Software + Services - a rich client application consuming a web delivered service. I guess they could have delivered this simply via a web page but the experience would not have been as good. In the same way, I think Google Gears validates the S+S approach.

I just registered though it says it's not available for Windows Vista. Dunno why but if you wanna check it out, you can apply now.
