Ezequiel SteinerTell us who you are and your role in the company:

I am the chief executive at Acumatica.

What did you do before creating your company?

Before Acumatica, among other things, I run server marketing and sales for IBM in Latin America, helped grow a virtualization and automation start-up to $100M+ in annual revenue and created a non-profit to standardize provisioning of software services to hosted environments.

How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

Having partnered with Microsoft for the most part of my career, and knowing how seriously Microsoft takes these accolades, we at Acumatica feel honored to receive this recognition. Acumatica is indeed a very promising company that is changing the way midsize companies think about their ERP systems.

What is your company’s mission?

Our mission is to help our customers realize all the productivity and cost-saving benefits of a cloud ERP solution.

In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:

Acumatica develops web-based ERP software designed to improve the productivity of mid-sized organizations. Using Acumatica, clients can access their business applications and documents from anywhere using any popular web-browser. Customers can purchase Acumatica as a SaaS solution or purchase a license which is designed to be hosted on-premise, at a datacenter, or on a cloud computing platform.

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

Acumatica is well funded and could become cash-flow positive with current funding. However, given our initial success and the size of the opportunity, we have decided to look for further funding to accelerate growth. We are expecting to go through another founding round in the first half of 2011.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

30/20.

Are you hiring? If yes, what are you hiring for and where?

Yes, we are hiring development and QA positions in Moscow and other professions in the USA.

Which platform are you building on?Why?

Acumatica runs on .NET with SQL Server as the database. Also, we run on Windows and SQL Azure. The selection of the platform is aligned with our strategy to go after midsized businesses through Value Added Resellers. .Net and SQL are technologies our target customers and resellers know well and therefore it lowers their acquisition cost.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?

Leveraging the transition from software to cloud services.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

It is a good opportunity for start-ups to start developing a relationship with a good partner like Microsoft.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

Just don’t go for the canned recipes or pay much attention to general advice. A good business opportunity is usually unique and therefore good advice will be specific to the situation.

Who’s your role model?

I admire a lot of people but don’t really have a role model.

What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?
