UPDATE: SQL Server 2016 is now available.
Hello from Seattle! We’re at PASS Summit 2015 where things are about to kick off and we’ll be unveiling more of the exciting investments we’re making in Reporting Services. Stay tuned to this blog for more news, but first things first: SQL Server 2016 CTP 3.0 is available for download now and includes another round of eagerly-anticipated enhancements to Reporting Services.
In case you missed it…
With our monthly CTPs of SQL Server 2016, we’ve already released a number of Reporting Services features (see CTP 2.3 and CTP 2.4). You can now
- Position report parameters the way you want
- Export reports to PowerPoint
- Create Treemap and Sunburst charts
- Design reports in an updated version of Report Builder with a modern theme
- View and interact with reports in modern browsers (thanks to a new HTML5-based renderer)
- Print reports from modern browsers (without installing an ActiveX control)
Pin to Power BI dashboards
In addition to using Reporting Services on-premises, more and more of you are now using Power BI in the cloud, and in particular, Power BI dashboards to monitor the metrics and trends that matter to you.
Now, with SQL Server 2016 CTP 3.0, you can pin visuals from your existing, on-premises Reporting Services reports to your Power BI dashboards. When you browse to a report server that’s registered with Power BI, you’ll notice a new Pin to Power BI Dashboard button in the Report Manager toolbar:
After clicking that button and signing into Power BI, you’ll see the report items on the page that you can pin. You can pin charts, gauge panels, maps, and images:
Then choose the dashboard where you’d like to pin the visual (and optionally adjust how often you’d like to update the tile):
And you’re done! You’ll now see that Reporting Services visual on your Power BI dashboard:
You’ll always see up-to-date information thanks to a Reporting Services subscription that runs on a schedule and updates the tile. When you need the details, simply click the tile to open the complete Reporting Services report.
With this “hybrid” cloud + on-premises integration, you don’t need to move all your existing reports to the cloud or recreate all your existing charts in Power BI; you can use Power BI while tapping into your existing, on-premises investments in Reporting Services.
Enabling this feature is easy; in Reporting Services Configuration Manager on the Power BI Integration tab, click Register with Power BI, sign into your Power BI tenant, and you’re all set:

Design reports in Visual Studio 2015
Yes, the SQL Server Data Tools October 2015 Preview for Visual Studio 2015 includes Reporting Services design tools! Design reports for SQL Server 2016 report servers and take advantage of the latest features like parameter positioning, Treemaps, and Sunburst charts, or target report servers running previous versions of Reporting Services.
Now you can get all the tools you need – for database development, ETL (Integration Services), modeling (Analysis Services), and reporting (Reporting Services) – in one lightweight download.
Use .NET Framework 4.x code
Programmability and extensibility are key strengths of the Reporting Services platform. Using the .NET Framework, you can include sophisticated expressions and code in your reports, reference external assemblies, or develop custom extensions for security, data processing, report rendering, or report delivery. We’re pleased to announce that Reporting Services now runs on CLR 4, so you can take advantage of the latest .NET Framework 4.x libraries and code.

Winner!
Are we expecting HTML 5 for Power View in the Premises say with SharePoint 2016??
Please searchable parameter combos D:
SQL Server 2016 looks to be VERY promissing! Very Excited at the new possibilities!
@Mohammed, check out this blog post about our roadmap: blogs.technet.com/…/microsoft-business-intelligence-our-reporting-roadmap.aspx.
@Riccardo thanks for the link to the blog post, I like what was there, especially that part "Publish Power BI Desktop Reports on-premises" but they say "we intend to add governed Power BI Desktop report delivery in the future." are we going to have this in 2016 or not?
A nice feature.. A shame I can't make it work. Receives an error:
Server Error : The item 'Dashboard deleted b743849a-67b7-4c63-80bb-42400786ea34' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound)
Anybody having a clue?
@Mohammed, for SQL Server 2016, we're adding mobile reports, which are interactive and work great across phones, tablets, and PCs thanks to native apps and HTML5. Next, we'll be adding support for Power BI Desktop reports some time after the initial "general availability" (GA) of SQL Server 2016. The exact date will depend on our progress, but we certainly aim to bring these exciting additions to market as quickly as possible.
@bobhen, currently, you can encounter that error if you try to pin to a dashboard that someone else shared with you and that you don't actually own or have permission to edit. (In an upcoming CTP, the drop-down list will filter out these dashboards so you don't encounter this issue.) If you choose a dashboard you own and can edit, are you able to pin successfully?
Very Nice Features!
…but I also get an error when trying to pin a report part to power bi.
I got a Nullpointer Exception. I tried different dashboards.
Hi Riccardo
I get the same error as bobhen, even when I try to pin to a dashboard I just created myself.
@Riccardo Muti
Same issue here :"Server Error : The item 'Dashboard deleted 3ea99689-3ac1-499c-ade5-ac0b31885534' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound)"
Also when pinning to a newly created dashboard.
@Riccardo I receive a similar error message as @bobhen when trying to pin a SSRS chart to a Power BI dashboard that I own and is not shared.
@Riccardo thank you for your answer. I kind of concluded this when thinking about it. I am using a VM in azure to pinning my report to the dasbhoard and my dashboard is created with my org- account. So I guess it make sense because of some security issue 🙂 Thanks:)
Why doesn't the new Export to PowerBI button appear when I preview a report? My 2016 report server is registered with PowerBI.
@TJ, if you don't see the toolbar button after registering the report server with Power BI, try restarting the Reporting Services service (using SQL Server Configuration Manager).
Update on the error "Server Error : The item 'Dashboard deleted <GUID>' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound)"
Thanks to everyone who reported this issue. Some customers are able to pin successfully while others are encountering this error. The Power BI/Azure Active Directory tenant seems to be a factor. We were just able to reproduce the error with a specific Azure AD tenant. We don't yet know more, but we'll continue investigating and post an update when we have one.
Thanks for your patience!
Does the SSDT October preview version support SSRS 2014 development?
Thanks!
UPDATE: We identified an issue in Power BI that was affecting certain Power BI/Azure Active Directory tenants and causing this error. We've deployed a fix and validated that it's resolved the issue for several customers. Please try again and do let us know whether the fix has resolved the issue for you as well.
Remember to choose a dashboard you actually own and can edit. (We'll make that part easier in an upcoming CTP.)
@Kathy, yes! On the report server project, you can specify the TargetServerVersion between SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2016. If you choose an older version and use a feature it doesn't support (like the new Treemaps and Sunburst charts), build/deploy will fail with a warning. You may then want to modify the report to remove that unsupported feature.
@Riccardo: Jep, pinning works fine now for me! thanks
Excellent. Thanks for your patience.
When I try to pin a report item to a dashboard, I get the following error message:
Cannot Pin
Server Error : System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. —> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.DeliverReportItemAction.DeliverReportItem(String Format, String DeviceInfo, ExtensionSettings ExtensionSettings, String Description, String EventType, String MatchData) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportExecution2005Impl.DeliverReportItem(String Format, String DeviceInfo, ExtensionSettings ExtensionSettings, String Description, String EventType, String MatchData) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WebServer.ReportExecutionService.DeliverReportItem(String Format, String DeviceInfo, ExtensionSettings ExtensionSettings, String Description, String EventType, String MatchData) — End of inner exception stack trace —
Any idea what could cause this?
I'm wondering about SSRS full rendering support for Sharepoint data sources, specifically Rich Text data from Sharepoint lists.
social.msdn.microsoft.com/…/sharepoint-enhanced-rich-text-field-in-ssrs-using-html-markup
I've been searching for a reporting solution that will correctly handle the HTML table and image tags from Sharepoint rich text fields. Any plans for this in SSRS 2016?
@Daniel, did you by chance upgrade a report server from an older version to CTP 3.0 (as opposed to a new installation of CTP 3.0)? You might be encountering a known issue with upgrade that we're fixing for an upcoming CTP.
@Jason, thanks for the feedback. We haven't expanded our HTML parsing support in SQL Server 2016, but I've ensured that feedback is on our backlog for consideration.
I’m getting error while connecting with Power BI. Appreciated early help on this.

Thanks for reporting this error. I’m checking whether we’ve seen this particular error before. We might need to follow up with you to investigate further.
I am trying to pin a report in Power BI from SSRS 2016 but when I try to sign in the power BI, it says “Sorry, but we’re having trouble signing you in.
We received a bad request.” ……. “Additional technical information:

Any ideas why this happens?
Some configuration of your Azure Active Directory tenant might be interfering. Could you open a case with Microsoft Support?
Hi, when I try pin a report on PowerBI, the toolbox where I choose the Dashboard is blocked and I receive a message that I don’t have a dashboard with permission to pin, and ask me to create a new dashboard. I just did this few times, and the message persists.
Anyone knows how resolve this? I gave permission to my account and ssrs service account.
We’d probably need to troubleshoot that one hands-on. Could you open a case with Microsoft Support?
Same here. I’ve registered the report server with Power BI using my Power BI account, and connected my Report Services account to the same Power BI account. Looking at the instructions to pin https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/mt604784.aspx#Anchor_2 shows the “Pin to Power BI Dashboard” dialog that should appear. I do briefly see this pop up before the error message, and I notice that one of the drop-down options relates to ‘Groups’. Given that groups are only available in Power BI Pro, does that mean we can only pin SSRS visuals if we have/pay for Power BI Pro?
You’re supposed to be able to pin whether or not you have Power BI Pro and whether or not you’re a member of any Groups, but we’ve now identified the issue in the RTM build: if you’re not a member of any Groups, then the dialog incorrectly reports that you don’t have any dashboards. We have a fix for this issue in an upcoming Cumulative Update.
I had the same problem, problem was solved by adding a new group and after that I could choose between the new group and My Workspace. Strange but is working
