Power BI Personal Gateway installation fails

Recently I worked on a Power BI case. The Power BI Personal Gateway fails to install. The error is

Service ‘Data Management Gateway Service’ (DIAHostService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

In the log file, you may see the following message

Error 1920. Service ‘Data Management Gateway Service’ (DIAHostService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

The system event log shows the a better error message

The DIAHostService service was unable to log on as NT SERVICE\DIAHostService with the currently configured password due to the following error:

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

Service: DIAHostService

Domain and account: NT SERVICE\DIAHostService

This service account does not have the required user right “Log on as a service.”

Cause: This NT SERVICE\DIAHostService account is created during the setup. This NT SERVICE\DIAHostService account is created and used as the default service account for the Data Management Gateway service before it is configured to run under a domain account.

Solution: I found this user is in the Performance Log Users and Performance Monitor Users local groups.

Open the Local Security Policy, expand Local Policies, then expand User Rights Assignment. Find the Log on as a service, policy, open the policy, add Performance Log Users to the list.

Make sure the Deny log on as a service policy is empty.

    Hi Huang,

I was aboe to install it in my local system. I have been trying to download the personal gateway from  powerbi site. But after reading the below link I've downloaded from Microsoft site and it is installed in my laptop.

  2. Hi Julie,

That means your user account is not a local machine admin. You may need your IT admin to help you perform this step.

    Hi Huang,

The Add User/Group and Remove buttons are inactive in the Log on as a service Policy.

  4. Hi Julie,

Because your computer has no user group in Log on as a service policy, the NT SERVICEDIAHostService account does not have the required user right "Log on as a service". All you need to do is to add the group "Performance Log Users".

Regarding the second problem, please create a new support case in powerbi.com. A support engineer will work with you to resolve the problem,

    Thanks

    Hi Huang,

I am also facing the same issue which you have mentioned in the blog.

I have got this error when I tried to install this in my laptop. I have gone through the solution which you have given but I could not find any user user groups in Log on as a service policy. So, I have installed it in a remote server. It successfully installed there and I have configured my powerbi.com account also. But, still I'm having the error message when I tried to schedule refresh for power pivot in powerbi.com.   This power pivot has been uploaded from Onedrive. The local folder of onedrive resides in my local system.

    Please suggest.

    Regards,

    Julie
