New CAT White Paper Published, SQL Perf in the cloud!

It is going to be a very busy summer with all the new toys going into preview, but before I get into all of those I wanted to share a paper that was released on SQLCAT.com this week; Performance Guidance for SQL Server in Windows Azure Virtual Machines. Before the on-prem folks blindly ignore it because it has Azure in the title, please take a closer look at it! While this will give you a lot of information about best practices to gain best performance for your Azure IaaS VM, it is also a pretty in depth refresher on SQL Server troubleshooting be it in the cloud or on prem.

Want to know the most surprising thing about troubleshooting SQL Server on IaaS in the cloud? It’s exactly like troubleshooting SQL Server on premise, all the same rules apply and your skills as a DBA transfer. If you are still using exclusively on prem this paper is still valuable as it consolidates many prior whitepapers and posts information for troubleshooting top statements by *, spinlocks, I/O and a list of performance monitor counters to keep an eye on. As well as the SQLIO scripts to test your own disk sub-system or in the cloud or on premise!

Happy Reading!
