On stage at the TechEd 2008 keynote

It has been a fun experience for me this morning.

I am at TechEd in Orlando, Florida and was able to join Bill Gates on stage during his keynote to talk to the audience about the paradigm shift in client application development and the user experience.  It has been a while since I have been the guy who is demoing the cool and exciting technology during a keynote.  Other people usually get to have that fun, and I now hold a new appreciation for what it takes to pull off a seamless demo experience.  I got to show a very cool demo of a new social networking site for sharing rich media content that was built in Silverlight and also talked about and showed some examples of WPF and the continuum of tools and platforms for client applications that spans devices, the browser and the Windows client

Here is a summary of the announcements that were made during the keynote:

·         Silverlight 2 beta 2 – This is going to be available later in the week with a commercial Go Live license.  Silverlight 2 beta 2 will be used to power the unprecedented online experience NBC Universal is creating for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. To help developers take full advantage of Silverlight, we are also making available Expression Blend 2.5 June 2008 Preview and Microsoft Silverlight Tools Beta 2 for Visual Studio 2008.

·         Working with IBM, we will further simplify application development for enterprise teams working in heterogeneous environments. IBM and Microsoft have agreed to work together to integrate IBM DB2 database access with Visual Studio Team System Database Edition.

·         Latest CTP of the Microsoft Sync Framework - a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services and devices. A CTP of the Microsoft Sync Framework for Windows Mobile is now available as is full support for the FeedSync open protocol format.

·         CTP of Microsoft Project Codename “Velocity” - a distributed in-memory application cache platform that makes it easier to develop scalable, high-performance applications needing frequent access to disparate data sources. Large clusters of machines can be seamlessly integrated into a single cache providing high availability to data.

·         Visual Studio 2008 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 v1.2 – this allows developers to use Visual Studio 2008 to extend the value of Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server by providing a simplified development environment.

I am looking forward to the rest of the day where I get a chance to engage (talk and listen) to some of the community leaders (MVPs, RDs, INETA leaders) here at TechEd.

  1. According to Somasegar who was on-stage today at TechEd with Bill Gates, Silverlight 2 Beta 2 is going

  2. We are getting inquiries from clients to help with new .Net, silverlight apps, etc. Looking forward to the results of teched–always a great time. Seems like all ISVs are gearing up for the next-latest and greatest ways to leverage Windows and Microsoft engineering.

  3. Will the next Silverlight drop work with Firefox 3?

  4. consumer4beta@hotmail.com says:

Hope it works with IE6 on Windows 2000 as promised. Also will Blend 2.5 RTM along with Silverlight this fall? MS should give Blend 2.5 away for free. That could be the best thing for Silverlight adoption.

  5. Aaron – I’m running the May 29th nightly drop of Firefox 3 and it works fine with Silverlight 2 Beta 1.

  6. Andrew says:

Soma – great demo, very slick – just watched this here in the UK on techedonline. The conveyer belt idea is very elegant.

I am looking forward to playing with the new Blend preview and Silverlight pieces when released. Also interested in finding out more about leveraging WPF databinding and use of WCF in the Silverlight world.

It would be really beneficial to getting the momentum going if you guys can take another look at the availibility of Expression Suite to Visual Studio + Msdn premium subscribers. Even upgrade pricing on 3 year ova with software assurance would be a step in the right direction.

Any chance that TFS support will be added to Blend soon? Oh, for the love of source control, please 🙂

  18. Yes… Soma Somasegar and Bill Gates have announced that Silverlight 2 Beta 2 will be publicly available

  19. Somasegar says:

    Hi Frinkfree,

Now that the team has shipped Expression2, they are in the planning phase for the next version of Expression.  TFS support is one of the things that the team is looking at and we make more progress, we can talk about what we are doing with Expression3 and the like.

  20. Daniel Carey says:

It’s a shame that the ‘Visual Studio 2008 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 v1.2’ doesn’t install on a 64-bit platform. Considering the total ‘count of things’; you guys get a huge percentage right…but sometimes I can’t help but be ‘pained’ by the misses.

The requirements don’t specify 32-bit only platform so I’m hoping it’s on it’s way and that ‘i just missed it’.

Oh, and if you can get the Xbox 360 Chatpad device driver developers to release a driver that supports the PC, I’d like that too …. 😉

    Best regards and Happy TechEd

  21. Lixin says:

Will there still be violation with ADO.NET entity framework? I am looking to use ADO.NET entity framework + WCF + Silverlight as our major solutions.

  22. Somasegar says:

    Hi Daniel,

We wanted to get out the 32-bit version as soon as it was available to customers and not have to wait till the team got done with the 64-bit version.

I will pass on the feedback to the sharepoint team.

  23. Mark Gordon says:

    Hi Soma,

There has been a paradigm shift alright, unforunately for developers it is a huge step backward. Microsoft has managed go from rapid application development to bloated spaghetti applications, while spinning this development tragedy as progress.

Please spare us with your listening to developers nonsense. There are two petition drives with 10’s of thousands of signatures requesting continued development of VFP and VB development environments  which have fallen on deaf ears at Microsoft.  Microsoft is all about profit and control not about developing tools that actually work!

With the exception of your inner circle of cheerleaders we are not buying your spin.

    Hi Soma,

We need more innovation and tooling for SharePoint development.   VSeWSS version 1.2 is great news!  Please keep the updates coming, esp. tools that will streamline the deployment process.  Deployment and debugging for SharePoint are a real pain compared with standard ASP.Net web development.

  26. Somasegar says:

Thanks for the feedback.  We do understand that we need to more in terms of tooling and development support for Sharepoint.  This is something that the team is looking at.
