MSDN benefits for partners

I have received a number of questions from our partners regarding the new MSDN benefits provided by the Microsoft Partner Program.

As we worked with the Microsoft Partner Program to revise the benefits for Visual Studio 2005, our goal was to provide every partner with a comparable or better benefit than what you previously received.  Here is how these benefits have been revised to meet this goal:

·         Partners at the Gold Partner level will receive 10 licenses of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers with MSDN Premium Subscription.  This also includes Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition (limited to 5 users).

·         Partners at the Gold level and in the ISV or Custom Developer Solutions Competency will receive an additional 25 licenses of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers with MSDN Premium Subscription.  This also includes Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition (limited to 5 users).

·         Empower members and partners at the Certified Partner level will receive Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition with MSDN Premium Subscription.   As before, this will include 5 licenses.

I am also aware that there have been some issues in providing you with the access needed to download the products to which you are entitled.  I apologize for this and assure you that we are on track to enable all the new partner benefits in the MSDN Subscriber Downloads by mid-December.  For now, there are a number of ways you can begin evaluating Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Team System:

  • All Partners (Empower, Certified, Gold) now have download access to Visual Studio 2005 Professional and Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite Trial Edition, via MSDN Subscriber Downloads.
  • Partner media kits containing Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 products will be included in the December Monthly Toolkit which began shipping on December 8th.

The Microsoft partner team is in the midst of updating their Web sites to reflect all of the above changes.  In the meantime, you can view the Microsoft Partner Program License Benefits FAQ.  Also, you can read Rob Caron’s nicely written Hitchhiker’s Guide to Visual Studio 2005 Team System for Microsoft Partners.

    Thankx for the information.

So if I get it right, there is no program for partners or competency level, which provides access to the VS2005 Team Suite edition.

So what are the options to get this, if one is a partner or has a specific competency level?

    Cheers Harry

Same comment as Harry: the fact that no program gives access to at least 1 team suite is sad. This would help swing some existing dev teams from other environments (we have 10 C# developers and 60 java developers but if our move to .NET doesn’t prove to painful we will probably move another 50 dev to .NET in 2006)

When calling to get details about VSTS and TFS, we have to talk to the MSDN contact, the partner contact and the ISV contact as nobody has the complete picture. Some of them are even confused between VSTS with the non-team version. We are trying to budget 2006 and if you guys are confused about your offering, so are we;)

An online wizard, where we could choose the number of licenses we need for each product (dev, architect, TFS, etc), and select our level (cert partner, gold partner, ISV, etc) to produce a small report (needed licenses existing/needed + unused licenses from program x) would be helpful.

    Hi Harry,

Partners who have paid for a Universal or Team Edition role (either a retail purchase or via Select or Enterprise Agreement) are eligible to upgrade to the Team Suite at a promotional price.

The Partner Program team is looking at other ways to make it easy for partners to get access to the different SKUs. Please stay tuned for more information on this in the first part of the next year.

    John & Harry,

Empower, Certified, and Gold Partners will be eligible to purchase VS2005 products and subscriptions via the Microsoft Open License program at a discount. The discount will be approximately 20% off of standard Open pricing. Details on this offer will be communicated by the Partner Program in early January.

Thanks for the feedback on Partner Program call centers. I will be sure that this is communicated to the Partner Program. I like your idea of an online wizard, and will look into the feasibility of implementing.
