While trying to install software updates, perform software uninstalls or repair actions on some or all application that are installed on the computer. An error similar to the following may be reported to the user:

“The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.”

If verbose logging is turned on you will see something similar to the following:

MSI (s) (74:08) [09:38:20:531]: Product: Microsoft .Product Name Here -- Installation failed.

MSI (s) (74:08) [09:38:20:968]: MainEngineThread is returning 1612

The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

Cause

The problem is caused by the following registry keys missing or partially missing:

· “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Patches"

· "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Patches"

Affected Products

Any application that has had a patch applied to it will exhibit the problem.

Resolution
