Lookup field across sites

Came across this really useful blog from Sahil Malik.

This one shows how we can use a lookup field across the sites. Though this will work only for top down hierarchy i.e. you can have a look up column in child site that looks up a list in the parent. Not the other way.

If you want to have it the other way i believe custom field type will be the way to go.
