Bit Bash: Indie Game Festival

So I’m the new girl gamer in the Chicago metro area. You might already know that I started at Microsoft on July 7th immediately after graduating from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington.

But here’s a little about me that you might not already know:

My favorite game genres include side-scrolling platformers, adventures, puzzles, role-playing, hack-and-slash, and party games. (Examples: Super Mario Bros, Cave Story, Minecraft, Tetris, Golden Sun, Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Super Smash Bros.) My favorite video game company as always been Nintendo because of their non-gory graphics and intuitive gameplay mechanics.

My least favorite game genres include shooters, simulation, strategy (I like to watch, not play), sports, racing, MOBAs, and MMORPGs. (Examples of games I don’t currently play: Call of Duty, Second Life, Starcraft, NFL Madden SportsBall 2014, Forza, League of Legends, DOTA, World of Warcraft.)

Games I haven’t played yet but want to extremely badly are the new Super Smash Bros. for WiiU and 3DS, The Last of Us for the PlayStation, and Child of Light for the PC.

Over the weekend I went to Bit Bash: Chicago’s first annual Indie Game Festival! According to their website (which is way cooler than mine),

“Bit Bash is Chicago’s first interactive arts festival showcasing an international collection of lesser-known but […] culturally significant video games. Local game developers have carefully selected over 30 unique titles — games you can play with a controller, games you play with friends, games you can hold in your hand, games with custom built controllers, and even rare arcade cabinets.”

At this event, I played tons of indie games and networked with several local Chicago game developers. I learned that quite a large number of games developed there used Unity! It was an absolute blast, and I am so looking forward to getting more involved in the gaming community!

My personal favorite games from this event were Killer Queen, Max Gentleman, and The Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Killer Queen

Sortasoft · The world’s only 10-player arcade strategy game. Two teams, each led by a powerful Queen, face off to be the first to bring the giant snail god home, fill their hive with nectar, or execute a triple assassination of the enemy Queen.

Max Gentleman

The Men Who Wear Many Hats · Max Gentlemen is an arcade-style extreme manners simulator about stacking hats, inspired by a spam email for male enhancement.

$ FREE on Steam. Sarah Says: Download and play for pugilism!

Crypt of the Necrodancer

Brace Yourself Games · Crypt of the NecroDancer is a hardcore rhythm-based roguelike game, played with a dance pad. Players must move on the beat to navigate procedurally generated dungeons while battling dancing skeletons, zombies, dragons, and more!

My other favorite games at Bit Bash were the Choosatron, dEXTRIS, Crawl, Gang Beasts, Nidhogg, A Fitting, Samurai Gunn, Relativity, Relax Harder, Super Hexagon, and FRU.

"Hate" is such a strong word! I never said "hate," I said "don't currently play" and "least favorite" 😉
