SAP and Hyper-V - current state

As Hyper-V became RTM end of June 2008, I quite often get the question where do we stay with the support of SAP for Hyper-V. As of today, SAP still works on the adoption which includes the following steps:

   - Running SD benchmarks on W2K3 and W2K8 guests to gain experience about the performance and configuration

   - Enhance the saposcol O/S collector to extract info about Hyper-V based virtual machines as well. This info can be displayed by the enhanced SAP   transaction OS07

Performance tests at SAP and with H/W partners went very well and the performance numbers we have seen are very good. Current test results are based on SAP Web Application Server 7.00 on Windows Server 2003 in a VM with 2 virtual processors. I expect soon to have the first published benchmark results on https://www.sap.com/benchmark. SAP provides feedback on these tests as well as tips for optimal configuration on their URL https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/windows. There is a general White Paper about virtualizing SAP applications on Windows as well as specific Hyper-V info. Additionally, you can check SAP note 674851 which is frequently updated.

Work with the second part, enhancing the saposocol agent for the extraction of support info, is still in progress. Here we use the new WMI providers for Hyper-V and the new perfmon counters to get the configuration and performance data for guest systems and the parent system.  I'll continue to update this blog if we have new info here but for now, I also expect to see this work finished toward the end of this year.

Have fun working with Hyper-V
