Power BI 12 Days of Dashboards – Day 12 – Crazy Christmas Dashboard

Day #12 - Crazy Christmas Dashboard

As part of my Power BI 12 Days of Dashboards series, day #12 brings this big project to a close with a Christmas Dashboard socked full of a few new tricks I learned throughout the creation of the blog series.

In the customer environments that I support, I don't get a chance to use marquees, background images, and animated snowfall backgrounds, so this final wrap-up dashboard seemed like a perfect time to add them all in! 🙂

Creating the marquee visual (scrolling "Happy Holidays!"):

After publishing this dashboard, I received a few emails and questions about how to create the scrolling marquee text. I'm using the "Scroller" visual from the custom visuals gallery. To supply the text, I created a data source using "Enter Data" that is a single table with one column and one value. When you open the .pbix file, you'll see this data source titled ScrollText, with the value of "Happy Holidays!". The final step is to add the Scroller custom visual and set the Category field to your Text from the ScrollText data source.

To try it out yourself, download the Power BI Dashboard from here and check it out in the Power BI Data Stories Gallery here.

Thanks to everyone who has commented and shared the blog entries over social media over the past 12 days. This series turned into a very large amount of time, but I learned a lot of new tricks, found a few product bugs that I reported to the development team, and had a great time building dashboards to share with everyone. I hope you all enjoyed it!

Happy holidays to all!

It has been fun going through the 12 days of dashboard Samuel, thank you for sharing and Merry Christmas!

    1. Thanks Patrick, it was interesting to see which topics were more popular than others. I had some predictions before I started about which would generate more interest (page views, social media shares, etc.), but I was way off on a few topics. I’m planning a “Follow-up / Lessons Learned / Results” blog in a few weeks to discuss some of the issues I found while creating the series and will share the rankings from the 12 entries.

      Thanks again,

Would it be possible to get some information on how to create some of the animation here, especially the ‘Happy Holidays!’

    1. Hi Dee Dee, I just updated the blog entry with some notes on creating the scrolling marquee. Thanks for the suggestion!
