Windows Vista and Feeds

As noted pretty much everywhere on the web, Windows Vista launched (for businesses) last week.

Windows Vista includes IE7 and the Windows RSS Platform, and is therefore the first Windows operating system to ship with built-in support for RSS (and the first OS of any kind to have RSS support built-in as a native platform component).

Windows Vista is, in fact, the fulfilment of a promise we made over a year ago at Gnomedex 5.0: Longhorn loves RSS.

In addition to the reading experience in IE7, and the platform features, Windows Vista also include the new Windows Sidebar, which ships with a Feed Headlines gadget.

The team that built the gadget have written up a great post on how the gadget was built, and how they leveraged the RSS platform to make development much easier for themselves.

Read their post here: Building the Feed Headlines Gadget.

In case you haven’t seen the gadget in action, the screenshot below shows the gadget after the user has clicked on a headline (I’ve configured it to show the headlines from the MSNBC News feed).

Many thanks to the folks on the Sidebar team that developed such a great gadget, as well as to Chrix Finne, who interned on the IE RSS team as a PM this past summer, and helped out the Sidebar team with feature design for this gadget.

Note: Apologies to readers who downloaded an earlier version of this post, which used a photograph taken by Niall Kennedy and posted on flickr.com. He did not appreciate the usage, and replaced it with a different image. I forgot to include an attribution, which I had fully intended to do, but for which I apologise to him.

Hey, I bet he did it for the lulz.

Nah, OK, more seriously, perhaps his way of dealing with this issue wasn’t stellar or gentlemanly, but you can’t blame Niall for not getting to the point.

I guess this incident highlights everything that’s wrong with copyrights nowadays.

  2. Rudd-O says:

Oh, Linux operating systems have been using a cousin of RSS (RDF) to power their update systems, so I’d say your claim of being the "first OS with RSS as a core component" may be technically right, but is certainly no great feat.

  3. valery says:

How exactly is an RSS reader connected to the functions of an OS ? isn’t it another way to use a dominant position to impose MS on another market.

Why don’t you just launch an RSS reader that people may use separately from the OS instead of overweighting the OS with tools that are not necessary there ?

  4. asdf says:

I normally don’t use intenet slang, but I think that OWNED sums this up nicely. That’s what you get for hotlinking images without permission and "forgetting" to give credit.

  5. Dan217 says:

Time is one of the great equalizers whether your rich or poor we all have the same amount. So what it comes down to is how you use it.

  6. Bill Gates says:

  7. Smedrick says:

Niall is a dick.  You did nothing wrong.

  8. Smegrick says:

You are a dick. Niall did nothing wrong.

  9. Both parties are sort of wrong. This blog was definitely wrong to reference a file hosted by someone else and leech their bandwidth, copyright issues notwithstanding. Niall was wrong to use the image that he did, but it was well within his rights. Besides, what’s to say he didn’t simply use the same filename for a different picture, without realizing that it wasn’t being used? Obviously not what happened here, but that’s one of the dangers of hotlinking.

  13. Dave M. says:

I bet this site gets a lot of traffic.  What were you thinking leaching his bandwidth?  If 100,000 people view this page a day that bandwidth would really add up and he would have to pay for it.

I edo not blame him for being upset.

  14. Microsoft is full of cockroaches that need to be cleaned out of the pantry.

This Summer/Fall of 2006 Microsoft’s Michael Swanson posted a call to the public via the Expression Suite newsgroups asking the public to comment regarding which vector file formats Microsoft should be supporting in their applications that output XAML.

I got excited about the prospect of Microsoft supporting the import of the ubiquitous DXF vector file format.

I’m an an old hand from the vector graphics realm which has been soiled by Autoslime who cripples their products to obstruct, hinder, or prevent customers from using the products or their own CAD file assets with Internet protocols.

There’s not one significant vector graphics application that does not support importing DXF as it has become the defacto standard which ironically was created by Autoslime way back when in the mid 1980s.

I took my time responding and posting to Swanson’s blog carefully crafting supportive statements signing the hossannas for DXF and what I call a new era of CAD.

I went all over the place to other CAD colleagues and peers to evangelize Microsoft’s Expression initiative letting people know that a new era of CAD is emerging. (Second Life, XAML etc…)

The possibility that Microsoft could help make amazing things in the CAD markets happen once again seemed a real ray of hope noting again Autoslime has crippled the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction markets (AEC) not to mention the manufacturing markets.

That statement is a fact as are the $15 billion of annual losses to the U.S. AEC markets which has been discovered and reported by NIST.

So what do I observe at his blog as I returned again and again to observe support for DXF? When it becomes apparent that DXF began to gain public support in response to Swanson’s call for public comment this cockroach removed the comments supporting DXF from his blog!

I reacted and in news://microsoft.public.expression.webdesigner I called him a rat for doing so. Most of the MVP cockroaches and sycophants immediately tagged me as Public Enemy #1 but I did notice the comments were restored.

Have I also made it clear that the MVP program is over-populated with liars, pimps, and punks too? A cockroach farm?

Don’t get the idea I’m a Microsoft hater either. Its the cockroaches stupid.

Shine a light on a cockroach and it will scurry away to try to once again hide in the dark but let them be and they populate and spread disease.

Although I’m not too hopeful (because Baldmer is still present) I do sincerely hope to be proven wrong in that Ray Ozzie may have a chance to restore integrity to the company I know and love. Sweeping the cockroaches out of the company would go a long long way to restore customer confidence not to mention the ire of the governing authorities.

The talent and skills of Microsoft’s employees means nothing if all they produce is ill will.

  15. Patrick Legacy says:

Ok, so firstly, you hotlinked this guy’s image? then you decided not to consult him or give him credit, and by doing so, you violate copyright law? then you claim to "forget" to add the attribution. bull. then you get upset that he changed his image that you hotlinked. its illegal to hotlink, and i cant believe that you still have a job, since you should not have been stealing bandwidth and broke copyright law. but after all, it is Microsoft, isnt it?

Hey, a man made a mistake and he admitted it!

    Just give him a break!

Or is it just because he’s from microsoft that’s why you guys keep bitchin’ around?

It’s a pic. A guy made the mistake and he was punished for it. He made an apology. Thats it. So stop the anti-microsoft rants!

  17. Shawn says:

Dang there are a lot of trolls out there.  Oh no!  It’s Microsoft!  The harbinger of evil and the source of all that is wrong with the world!  God forbid that people have easier times using their computers with Microsoft!

  18. Somnus says:

Ok Sean made a mistake and apologized for it. I can accept that.

I can even accept the reaction from Niall. Obviously he was pissed, and rightly so.

What I can’t see is all the people jumping all over Sean _just_ because he works for Microsoft. So what?!!? He is still a human being that makes mistakes, no matter where he works.

So what if Microsoft is screaming Anti-Piracy (like they should be to protect their products), that is no reason to go after Sean.

Give the man a break folks.

To err is human, to really mess things up requires Windows ME :)

yeah it is so funny… but clearly the outcry is sort of expected, microsoft is really pushy with DRM (a arguement for another site) and when it doesnt abide by its own marketing hype then u should expect some anger, but really why have people stopped laughing and started complaining, this is just funny….

the problem with the net is too often people take it to seriously and not as the joke it is more often.

  21. ie7isprettygood says:

    RE: Firefox fanboy.

Comming to a microsoft blog to talk about how much you think firefox rules or 0wNz doesn’t make you cool. If you didn’t notice IE7 is a pretty good browser. Sure they have added tabbed browsing, and some might say they are copying firefox with that addition. I say so what? If it works it works, and in IE7 it seems to work better then firefox. Not to mention that most of the new firefox themes for version 2.0 are quite ugly. I do have firefox installed. I use both browsers to check cross browser design when I’m making a new webpage. Yeah, and let’s face it the inability for firefox to add the css image styles is just ridiculous. How hard can it be? Why not include them? Same with custom color scroll bars. Either way my only complaint about IE7 is that I haven’t yet seen a way to skin it…. Don’t get me wrong it looks good as is, but I would like to have a go at making my own skin for it. One more thing Mr.Fanboy just to clear this up for you since I’m sure you are just waiting to come back here just to say use 1inuX n00b or some thing else along those lines. I do use linux. Slackware/XP MCE dual boot. Linux is on my comp for development purposes only as I do not like most win 32 development environments. Anyway there is a pic still out there that depicts what happened here, and a link available from neowin (d0t) net .

  22. ie7isprettygood says:

Sorry for the double post all but I forgot to add that firefox fanboy probably wouldn’t be able to notice just how much more evolved IE7 has become in comparison to IE6 because he is probably running a pirated copy of windows. lol. People complain about not having this, and that in their browsers, and other software but when it comes down to it they are most likely using a "free" to them software in the first place. By free I meant because they simply downloaded it.

The post has given great publicity to an otherwise boring topic, I’m posting this in our news section asap.  Keep the innovation rolling guys, great work.

  24. BraiNDra!N says:

The last post was of bad taste, and that was my sole opinion.  I would never post something like this in news, and sites that do so are the whole reason this got blown so out of proportion.  RSS support in Vista is excellent, and I completely agree with the rest of the post.  Vista has been a giant step forward in RSS support.

  25. Fireware says:

There we go, we CAN conduct ourselves in the proper manner.

  26. ie7isprettygood says:

I believe I was conducting myself properly. Well I might have been able to leave out calling him a firefox fanboy. But I would like to point out that rss feeds are ironically responsible for so many hit’s to this page. I don’t run neowin. I left the link because that is how I myself ended up here, and I find the what the original image owner did to be quite funny. Was it in poor taste? Yes, I do believe it was. Was it funny? Once again I have to say yes. Some of us have a sense of humor. Maybe what the image copyright holder did wasn’t exactly funny to some people but at the same time it will teach some a lesson. If you are going link to an image at least ask permission, and if permission can’t be obtained at least put the image on your OWN server. That way you can avoid these type of problems of using up peoples bandwidth. If he would have just copied the image in the first place the original photographer would most likely have never even known. Not to say that copying peoples images is the right thing to do but you would be less likely to get caught, and avoid these types of situations.

  27. Pozycjonowanie says:

Someone else below asked this already.

Not in the registry but you could copy the default feed headlines gadget to your user gadgets directory. Then edit the js file. I believe there are global variables in the first 20 lines one for an array of items the other for the names corresponding to that array.

Linux is very shi..y i tested Vista too, but switched back to XP, Vista ist looking really nice but to run it you need 2 or 1,5 Gbs of RAM, any MB below will give you  some serious slowdowns, as it used 700 of my 1024 MB at a fresh new installation…

Why don’t you just launch an RSS reader that people may use separately from the OS instead of overweighting the OS with tools that are not necessary there ?

I think VISTA is a notable improvement over XP, although many would disagree. Where I think they’ve gone wrong with VISTA is only offer better security solutions with the higher (and more expensive) versions and offer very little in terms of networking/security in the basic versions (well, they provide only basic options). I think this was a mistake, and one of the reasons why I have finally moved to Linux instead. Other than that, VISTA is a better operating system than XP.
