MEDC 2007 Europe in Berlin

"There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace.  General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate!  Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!  Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" - President Ronald Reagan 20 years ago

Berlin is a beautiful city with a rich history which made it a perfect location for the final stop of our MEDC 2007 World Tour.  We brought our all-star team to this event including John O'Rourke, Jason Langridge, Andy Wigley, Daniel Moth, Maarten Struys, Larry Lieberman, Sue Loh as well as our travelling "not ready for prime time players."  I can feel that the European developer community is really embracing Windows Mobile as evidenced by the incredibly positive responses I received in the sessions I delivered.  I tried something new this time around and created Visio architecture diagrams live and on-the-fly during my session on Unifying the Desktop and Device with SQL Server Compact.  It worked really well and was the next best thing to having a whiteboard to draw on.

When we weren't working the event, we spent a lot of our time sightseeing.  Below is a picture of the sign at Checkpoint Charlie.

Nearby, we could see what was left of the Berlin Wall.  It's amazing how much has changed in the last quarter-century.

Our evenings were full of fun as we ventured out to Berlin's great restaurants and bars.  Larry Lieberman looks excited to have some rump steak.  Who wouldn't be?

Our MEDC 2007 event in Berlin was a huge success which capped-off a great world tour.  Hats-off to Derek Snyder and all the other important players worldwide for making it all happen and bringing the message of Windows Mobile development to over 10,000 developers.  The torch has now been passed to me and so I'll have a lot to live up to in crafting our most important mobile event for 2008.
