Windows Installer XML Ship Party

Last night I invited a number of the people who helped the Windows Installer XML toolset release to SourceForge.net over to my house for a small ship party.  It was a really low key event where we all sat around talking about the crazy things we saw written on the internet about the WiX toolset, reminiscing about some of the whacky bugs we fixed in the past, discussing the things we need to fix and improve going forward, and drinking cheap champagne (it is a volunteer effort after all).

Jenny took a few pictures during the evening.  At some point she rounded up the core five developers and took a picture.  From left to right, we have:  Scott Kurtzeborn (better known as β€œK”), Derek Cicerone, myself, Reid Gustin, and Robert Flaming.  Jenny also made a cool looking cake that also tasted really good.

It was a great way to unwind after a really amazing launch.  Now it’s time to get back to work on the toolset.

Back to work… such as giving the devs on SourceForge rights to commit changes? 11 bug reports and counting… πŸ™‚

On a semi-related note, I hope that people internal to MS who contribute to WiX will do so through SourceForge. Having a SF WiX and a MS WiX completely defeats the purpose.

Is this an official MSFT project? Please elaborate on how this project is related to MSFT. Thanks.

I’m a developer for a large european company (aerospace and defense sector). looks like some groups are going to have a closer look at the toolkit!

    thanks, dude!

Awesome, WiX is number three on the Top Ten downloads on SourceForge.net. Someone has also submitted a project to create a GUI for it.

Can we get more examples?, ie how to add lots of files in an install package?, I couldn’t find it out, so I created some code to create the xmlfile for it, but isn’t it any simpler way?

Where do we register bugs? (do I need to register me on sf.net to enter them?)

I found out if you use Comment="" in the Package element light.exe crashes.. candle.exe makes an empty element in the wixobj file but it doesn’t work for light.. (using 2.0.1727.0)

But otherwise, keep it comming!! πŸ™‚

  6. AsbjornM,

There is a place for people to upload their examples on SourceForge. You might try sending an email to wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net and see if people would be willing to contribute. I am working on documentation slowly (other people are helping as well) so hopefully that will be useful too.

Finally, you register bugs on SourceForge in the bugs section. Yes, you do have to register with SourceForge to post bugs. That helps keep the trolls out. A bug report for your issue would be much appreciated.
