Interview with Xuhao He (MS engineer for SharePoint internal host)

[Roberdan] How do you can change my quota (and only mine) so quickly?

[Xuhao] It’s a feature of WSS. If you deployed WSS, go to http://localhost:8080/SiteQuota.aspx and you will be able to manage quota for sites.

[Roberdan] have you moved my collection to another server? or what?

[Xuhao] No.

[Roberdan] if you want I can post this info on my blog: I think could be very usefull for my customers…

[Xuhao] Yes, please and thanks.

[Roberdan] Also, how do you manage users?

[Xuhao] WSS of OfficeISP is deployed in so called AD-Creation mode, which means the site user AD accounts don’t exist before you invite user to your site. When you invite user to your site, an AD account is created on the fly (and stored in a specific OU that the WSS app pool ID has permission to create child object) for your site user.

[Roberdan] do you have an external Active Directory?

[Xuhao] Yes, we have a AD domain called OfficeISP.local for the OfficeISP WSS hosting.

[Roberdan] provisioning is self-developed or mcs o market solution?

[Xuhao] We use stsadm command to create site. As mentioned above, the AD account creation is automatic when you invite user to your site.

THX Xuhao!

  1. inviting same user creates another account says:

    hello xuhao.

    In AD Account Creation mode,

when you invite the same user

    (same email address) another

account is created, eg if you

    invite bob@microsoft.com a 2nd

time you get a bob2 user in AD.

Is there any way to control

the creation of new AD accounts.

  2. Xuhao he says:

In a WSS Host-Heaser and AD-Creation mode (this is the mode OfficeISP is deployed) top level site or site collection, (a site collection is the top-level site such as http://www.officeisp.net and all its sub sites such as http://www.officeisp.net/site1 etc), when you remove an user from a site through the UI http://siteURL/_layouts/1033/user.aspx (Site Settings -> Manager User), this AD account of this user is not deleted from AD. So when you invite the same user (with the same email address) to any site of the same site collection again, the existing AD account is re-used – no new account will be created. If you want to delete the AD account when remove a user, you should remove it from the site collection – http://siteURL/_layouts/1033/siteusrs.aspx (Site Settings – > Go to Site Administration – >View site collection user information

If you want to invite the same person (with the same email address rob@mircrosoft.com ) to different site collections (top level site), e.g. http://site1.officeisp.net and http://site2.officisp.net , two different accounts will be created (OfficeISProb1 and OfficeISProb2. Is this the question/scenarion you have? ) – this behavior is by design – if you ever see the same accounts used in two different top level sites in OfficeISP – it is a bug (cross site contamination) and you should report it to us.

    Hope this helps,

    Xuhao
