The Middleware Company gave two independent development teams a specification for a loosely-coupled system. Each team—one team using IBM WebSphere/J2EE running on Linux, the other team using Microsoft .NET running on Windows Server 2003—was to develop, deploy, tune, and test the system in a controlled laboratory setting.
