Hey, I resemble that remark. (I have a new theme song!)

I am proud to announce that I have a new theme song! If you don’t have one, I strongly recommend that you get one. It’s almost like that goofy AIG commercial. Weird Al brings us my new theme song. Somebody has been kind enough to violate Weird Al’s copyright and post the entire music video to…

Giving Live Writer a try…

Since the Word 2007 blog features can’t seem to connect to my Blogger alter ego in the current build, I figured that I’d give Live Writer a try. <sarcasm>It’s not like I’ve got anything better to do while sitting here in rainy Chicago @ O’Hare waiting for a delayed plane to rainy Houston. At least…

You’ve got to wonder what is so important…

If anybody knows Joe Barton (R, Fort Worth, Texas), please ask him to explain what possible reform at the National Institute of Health is so important that it’s worth blocking the Combating Autism Act of 2006 from passage in the House of Representatives. I’ve seen his bullet points and I don’t see anything that can’t…

McAfee ASAP collision with old version of Daemon Tools fixed with new version?

This doesn’t seem to be clearly documented anywhere, but the new version of Daemon Tools 4.0.6 seems to have fixed a collision that it had back with version 4.0.3. The bug was exhibited by a blue screen PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA in mfehidk.sys. The blue screen was so terminal that one of the apps had to go on…

Possible justification(s) for… toys?

I think my fear of the wife’s ire has just been surpassed (finally) by my need to possess Lego Mindstorms. A new Mindstorm-ready version of the LabView Toolkit is coming. Cool! My oldest kids are soon to be 7 and 8 years old, that’s old enough, right? I’m pretty sure the Home Boss won’t concur….

Given a choice… Is there really a choice?

[Warning: Not Microsoft Technology-related… yet.] The elusive electric car is getting closer to a commercial reality, despite the many conspiracy theories that abound. Two that seem likely to show up in a dealership near you in the next 12 to 18 months are the Tango and the Roadster. My money is on the Tesla Motors…

Ask and ye shall (eventually) receive?

It’s taken a little while to arrive, but now that it’s nigh, I wonder how many *nix users (who have claimed over the years that the GUI was their primary objection to Windows) will even consider a switch to Server Core for their infrastructure servers? Redmond Magazine has a good preview of Server Core: Windows…

LoggingMode.UseParentSetting is a good idea, but… beware the connection string!

Because logging starts before configurations are loaded (classic chicken-egg thing, we went with chicken apparently), if you’re trying to set your connection string from a parent package variable, this no workie for logging. Doh! While I wish I were smart enough to have figured this out for myself from the pieces of the puzzle that…

I can try, but I’d sure like to be able to catch.

Integration Services is a beautiful high-speed engine. If BizTalk were that fast processing flat files… but I digress. There’s a little thing that’s missing in SSIS which bugs me. There’s no try-catch concept in SSIS. I realize that enabling such functionality would cut into its awesome speed, but the Failure path doesn’t kick in when…
