Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 Update for Windows 7 SP1 released to web

Update on February 12, 2014: The RDP 8.1 packages have been re-released and are now available on the Download Center and via Windows Update. To download the packages, go to Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 update for Windows 7 SP1.

Update on March 6th, 2014 : In order to install the Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 client for Windows 7 SP1,the following updates should be installed in the order shown:

 

  1. KB 2574819: An update is available that adds support for DTLS in Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1  
  2. KB 2857650: Update that improves the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections features is available for Windows 7
  3. KB 2830477: Update for RemoteApp and Desktop Connections feature is available for Windows
  4. KB 2913751: Smart card redirection in remote sessions fails in a Windows 7 SP1-based RDP 8.1 client
  5. (Optional) If you experience connection reliability issues after installing KB 2913751, we recommend installing KB 2923545: Update for RDP 8.1 is available for Windows 7 SP1 .

With this update, users who use Windows 7 SP1 client devices will be able to connect to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 remote computers and experience all the new features that the latest versions of these operating systems introduce, such as:

· RemoteApp experience improvements

1. Can I install this update on a computer that has the RDP 8.0 update installed?

Yes, you can install the update on computers running Windows 7 SP1 that already have the RDP 8.0 update installed. You don’t need to uninstall the RDP 8.0 update to install this update.

2. Does this update introduce any new server-side improvements (i.e. virtual desktop improvements)?

No, this update only adds features to the Remote Desktop Connection client. No RDP server-side improvements (such as Windows 7 SP1 virtual machine or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Remote Desktop Session Host) are made available as part of this update.

3. While installing the update I am seeing the following installation error: “This update is not applicable.” What should I do?

This error can occur when the update has already been installed or the prerequisite packages are not installed. Please follow the instructions in the KB article.

4. Can I install the update on computers running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1?

Yes, the update can be installed on computers running Windows Server 2008 R2.

5. How do I verify that the update package has installed successfully?

Launch the Remote Desktop Connection client program from the start screen, click on the small remote desktop icon in the top-left corner of the application dialog box, and then select About. Verify that the About message says “Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 supported.”

6. I have Windows Embedded Standard 7 based thin clients. When will the RDP 8.1 update be available for my devices?

We are working with thin client manufacturers to validate and release the update for Windows Embedded Standard 7. The updates for your respective devices will be available from the device manufacturer. Please contact your thin client manufacturer for availability.
