Assembly load failure installing the 2.0 Framework

I just helped debug an interesting framework failure. Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 — Error 25015.Failed to install assembly ‘C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Microsoft.VisualBasic.Vsa.dll’ because of system error: 0x80131107 Turns out the customer had their COMPLUS_VERSION envionrment variable set to 1.1.4322 (the 1.1 framework).  This caused mscoree.dll to load the 1.1 version of framework and use that to GAC…

SQL Server Express can not install to a compressed drive

If you’re trying to install VS to a compressed drive, SQL Server Express will fail.  Unfortunately, VS doesn’t tell you much when SQL Server Express failed. If you try launching SQL Server Express by itself, it’ll display the following message: MS SQL Express cannot install to a compressed folder – either uncompress the folder or…

Moving from Beta to RTM

There’s been a bunch of blogs, newsgroup posts, etc on how to fix your machine if you don’t uninstall Betas correctly and get into a bad state. Aaron (one of our former testers on VS Setup) put together a great summary of all the potential issues and links to workarounds:

VS 2003 – Reboot required but there’s nothing to reboot!

I’ve seen several posts around installing VS 2003 where VS detects a reboot is required before it begins the install. Installation problems – LoadSetupObjectGuid() :

I just saw two folks with an issue installing VS or Express because they had Kaspersky AntiVirus installed. The error you see int he setup log is: [11/07/05, 19:11:01] setup.exe: [2] ISetupModule::SetManager() failed in ISetupManager::LoadSetupObjectGuid() : vs_setup.dll If that product is installed, it will hang the VS installation.
