PDC VS Beta 2 DVD install fails

The company who ended up burning the PDC 2005 DVDs didn’t realize the DVD Name on the media needs to be DVD1.

The media table of the Visual Studio 2005 MSI requires the files to be on “DVD1” when installing from media.  Since the label name is not DVD1, Setup will prompt and ask the user to insert Disk 1 to find a cab file.

The prompt you’ll see is:

“Please insert the disc: Visual Studio 2005 DVD”

The workaround to get VS installed is to copy the entire VS folder to your hard drive and run setup.exe from there.  Another option is to copy the DVD and burn it to another DVD and make sure the new DVD is called “DVD1”.

We found out about this yesterday after 7500 DVDs were burned and it was too late to reburn the DVDs.

  1. diegov says:

    Beta 2? You mean RC?

  2. Quan says:

There will be two sets of VS DVDs distributed.

One will have Beta 2, the other will have the RC build.

  3. Roadkill says:

I’m assuming we don’t get the RC DVDs until the end… huh?

  4. diegov says:

Well, then I guess this makes it less critical. I mean, most going to the PDC have had access to beta 2 for months.

  5. Just to clarify, I am the person who is ultimately responsible for the PDC DVD package that we’re handing out, and *I* made the mistake. Unfortunately, I wasn’t made aware of the disc naming problem until it was too late to run another set. The vendor jumped through hoops to help us out, and I want to be clear that it was not their fault.
